Seeds of Hope

Boxes of good quality seeds will be given to families in Eastern Europe. Many families have some land but cannot afford to ultilise it. This project enables them to grow their own food. This saves money on food bills, improves the family's diet and may even earn them a little extra money.

Handing out the boxes takes a month or so, Feb-Mar. The produce is usually harvested Jun-Oct.

  • Need

Families in Eastern Europe suffer poverty and malnutrition as a result of a lack of jobs. Food increases in price in the winter months, and many cannot afford to give their children food, let alone a balanced and nutritious diet.
Any seeds they can afford will usually be low quality, and will produce fewer plant and a lower yield crop.

By providing the families with good quality seeds we help them to:
    a) grow their own food
    b) ensure their time and effort pays off with a high yield crop
    c) improve their nutrition and health
    d) save money which can then be spent on things like school supplies (meaning that the children can get an education).

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Support x families through Seeds of Hope.

» By providing Seeds of Hope boxes, and additional irrigation equipment, tools etc to families. Also giving advice and training as needed.

    What success will look like

Success will be enabling each of these families to try to grow their own food.

  • Impact

The project will bring long term change to each family that receives a box. Their expertise in growing their own food will grow, along with their confidence. Additionally, the money they save on food this year will mean they are in a better financial position next year, and so on. Money saved on their food bill may mean the children can go to school this year, and so will enable them to get an education.

There is a risk that unusual weather conditions could adversely affect the harvests. We will deal with this by giving a range of seeds in each box so that they have a good chance of suceeding with most of the crops. In addition, families will be given support along the way to cope with obstacles or difficulties that arise.

In autumn our newsletter feature "How you have helped" will look at the results of the project. In addition updates will be posted to our Facebook page throughout the spring and summer, showing photos and comments from various families.

  • Background

This project is largely based in the rural regions of these countries. In the communist era villages would farm together and as a cooperative would produce food for the community. Families now own their own land, but many don't have the resources to farm it effectively. Employment in these areas is scarce and so many families live in poverty. Food is expensive and people go hungry or have to sacrifice education, warmth or other necessities to buy it.

The families who receive the boxes will benefit directly. Their neighbours may also benefit if the families grow a surplus or crops as they will then be able to trade this for other food or goods. In addition, the families will be able to pass on their expertise and support others if they decide to take up small scale subsistence farming in the future.
