Skiing on Real Snow!

Travelling with autistic children to a country with guaranteed snow. Up until now we have only used artificial surfaces and would like funding to help a group of children travel to Austria with the organisation who specialise in working with cognitive and learning disabilities.

  • Need

Our inability for the children to experience skiing in Alpine conditions. Due to the unpredictable nature of the Scottish winter/ ski season.

The trip will give the children the opportunity to ski on real snow and to test their blossoming ski ability as well as travelling to a foreign country where their language and communication skills will also be tested.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Travel to Austria to alpine ski.

» Using a selected organisation skilled at working with children with additional support needs, Skiing4all, will help us achieve this.

    What success will look like

Success will be...the continued skiing when we return home which will hopefully be at a higher and skilled level than previously.

    Aim 2

Experience different languages and cultures through communication.

» Travelling to Austria will already enhance the German language studies they are currently studying.

    What success will look like

Success will be...improved communication and language skills which is the main problem that faces children on the autistic spectrum.

  • Impact

Increased level of confidence and communication of their personal needs as well as an enhanced fitness level. Also a healthier approach to outdoor activities and outdoor learning.

The main risk is lack of finance to fund the project. We have funding for extra-curricular skiing and the training of our staff as volunteer instructors. However, due to the demographics and areas of social deprivation which a great deal of our children reside in, this provide us with a real hurdle to cross.

We always photograph/ video our students as a fun way of showing them progress and as a record of achievement. This with a written report on the project is commonplace with our organisation and will continue to do so.
