White Ribbon World Cup Development Work

White Ribbon Campaign working with football clubs to jointly sponsor activity and pledge events and sign ups for ongoing white ribbon campaign activity prior to the World Cup 2014 The project will work with education providers to awareness raise around eradicating violence towards women

  • Need


    There is a well acknowledged risk of an increase in men's violence against women during major sporting events. Strathclyde Police recorded 80% increase in Domestic Violence during a Scottish Cup Final. During some games in the 2010 World Cup there was a 27% surge in the reporting rate of Domestic Violence.There is no funding provision for information and awareness raising work which needs undertaking. Even more vital is the ongoing work which ensures that the issues are addressed year round.


    White Ribbon Campaign UK will develop a set of downloadable materials made available to every local authority in the UK. We wsill ensure take up as we already have excellent links with them through our white ribbon authorities accreditation programme. We will also run regional seminars for practicioners and a national media campaign to draw on our experience. In the 2012 European Championship four radio stations including national BBC channels and overseas broadcasters called on our expertise.

    Success will be demand for more than 500 posters and 5000 leaflets in 25 different locations

    Mewasurable attitude changes among young men and men .
    Success will be measured by feedback from local campaign groups o the value of the materials


    There is a risk that there is no take up of the materials. However we have been asked at previous major sporting event f to provide such resources, and it is only lack of funds which has prevented us responding. When we promote the materials with media campaign there will be a substantial demand for their availability


    Via our monthly newsletter currently distributed to over 4,000 recipients and website

    Local and Regional
    West Yorkshire has an above average rate of Domestic Abuse. Approximately half of the female population have been victims of domestic abuse, stalking or sexual assault. White Ribbon Campaign activities have been supported by campaigners from across the region and across all communities.


    A number of victims have emailed and texted us to tell us how much they value our services. Local campaigners will feel supported and value the quality of materials which we will be able to offer them.

    WRC UK has been heralded as unique. WE have given presentations on our work to numerous organisations including Womens AId National Confernence, the Inter Parliamentary Union, and Council of Europe, . Over 30 local councils are signed up as white ribbon accredited supporters.
