  • Need


    The need for affordable technology & the digital literacy skills to use it within the Ethiopian educational system is evident. Reports have shown that an average of only 10 out of 1,500 primary schools have any form of rudimentary access to ICT, and sometimes this is in the form of only one computer with no Internet access.

    Without this access & skills, children & their teachers can miss the opportunity for better education & livelihoods that can help them break free of the poverty cycle


    Camara's social enterprise model delivers an eLearning centre with a wide range of products and services to schools through the Ministry of Education at heavily subsidised prices making them affordable and valued to even the most disadvantaged Ethiopian schools.

    Our eLearning centres provide computers, software and educational packages, teacher training, technical support and end of life computer recycling. Each centre aims to make 525 children digitally literate over the life of a computer.

    To make 1,575 children across Ethiopia digitally literate.


    » Installing 3 eLearning centres in schools across Ethiopia
    » Training 21 teachers in the use of educational software and technology.
    » Receiving donations of 75 computers, refurbishing them and loading them with free operating and educational software.

    Annual Monitoring and Evaluation surveys will report on the number of children competently using computers in schools with our eLearning centres.

  • Impact


    Digital Literacy helps in two important areas: Educational Performance - Access to technology and the ability to use it to obtain online resources, experience multimedia content and practice collaborative learning all enhance the system of learning for children and Better Livelihood Skills - In the 21st Century, being able to use a computer makes it easier for people to get a job, start a business, or work more productively. Monitoring & Evaluation of retention, performance and digital literacy


    There is a risk that schools do not implement the required eLearning centre requirements, training for teachers and correct use of computers.

    We have dealt with this by conducting training & review visits to each school from our staff in the Africa service centre.

    There is a risk that Educational Hubs in country do not meet their targets in selling to schools.

    We have an Africa Service Centre that mentors Hub staff and audits sales on a weekly & monthly basis.


    Donors will receive a personalised letter giving name, student details & google location,pictures and stories from the students and staff at the school of the eLearning centre they have sponsored.

    Our annual M&E report will also be sent to donors detailing outcomes in all countries.

    eLearning centres will be placed in schools in Addis Ababa and the Amahara region of Ethiopia


    The eLearning centres will be placed into Primary and Secondary schools across Ethiopia. Reaching disadvantaged children aged between 5 and 17 in this country. The need for affordable technology, & the digital literacy skills to use that technology within this area is evident. Primary schools lack access to computer equipment and although most secondary schools have some computer equipment, this is usually one computer for a teacher.

    Why Us?

    Founded 10 years ago in Dublin, Ireland the organisation has built a proven model of 'education delivery' that is both sustainable and highly scalable. 1,000,000 children in poor communities have been made digitally literate by Camara over this period. To achieve this, Camara has provided eLearning Centres to 3,300 schools in Africa, Ireland and the Caribbean - installed 66,000 computers and trained over 18,000 teachers how to use the technology for learning purposes.
