Alne Pre-school Playgroup New Build
We are raising money for our own purpose-built playgroup building with outdoor play space, designed for the needs of children. This will enable us to meet the demands of families in our community: operating 5 days per week with longer opening hours and with sessions during school holidays.
June 2012 - June 2013
Alne Pre-school Playgroup
There is a lack of affordable childcare facilities in our rural community. We do not currently have our own building and therefore use the village hall. One consequence of this is that we are only able to open 4 days a week during term time, due to other bookings at the village hall. Many families have to travel outside the village to access childcare. This puts pressure on families, particularly working families, who are trying to juggle jobs and childcare.
Having our own building will enable us to open 5 days a week. It will also enable us to develop our services to include a breakfast club, after school club and provide sessions during school holidays. These additional services will provide the families in our village and surrounding villages with a high quality, affordable, full time childcare option on their doorstep.
Expansion of pre-school childcare provision in Alne.
Activities» Open 5 days a week.
» Establish a breakfast club and an after school club and a regular holiday playscheme.
Success will be Alne Pre-school Playgroup being open 5 days a week with some out of hours provision.
Improved facilities that will boost the independence and confidence of the children.
Activities» Design the building with the children. Ask them what they want in the building and involve them in decision making.
» Include child sized facilities such as toilets and sinks so children can learn to go to the toilet by themselves and wash their own hands.
» Build a secure, well insulated building that embraces renewable technology including an air source heat pump to power underfloor heating.
Success will be the children demonstrating more independence in their activities both within the playgroup and at home. Success will also be fully booked sessions.
Reduce social isolation amongst new parents, particularly mothers.
Activities» Use the build project itself to encourage parents to get involved by fundraising, joining the management committee or even decorating and gardening.
» Establish the building as a focal point for support, advice and friendship for parents.
» Set up a toddler group in the village.
Success will be increased participation in playgroup activities by parents.
Ease the transition from pre-school to primary school, making this a less daunting move.
Activities» Set up joint activities with the reception class at Alne Primary School, such as shared playtime.
Success will be our pre-school children settling in faster at primary school.
Longer term we hope to build on the services we are able to offer. The success of this will be demonstrated by the establishment of a sustainable toddler group in the village and by a regular holiday playscheme that will give parents a high quality, affordable childcare option during the holidays.
Longer term we hope our improved facilities will improve our overall offer. The success of this will be an 'Outstanding' rating from Ofsted.
The main risk is that the move to a new building will increase our costs to a level that is unsustainable. We have however worked closely with North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) to forecast running costs in the new building to ensure the project is sustainable in the long term.
Another risk is that build costs increase. To guard against this, we have employed the services of a project manager to ensure the budget and timescales are controlled.
We will produce a regular update for donors. This will be available by email or post. Once the building is complete we will be holding several open days to which donors will be invited.

Alne is a small village situated 12 miles north of York and 4 miles South West of Easingwold in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire. There are approximately 271 households in the village and the 2001 census indicated a population of 711. We have many young families in the village and a very successful Primary School. We are a car dependent community; local bus services are limited yet people need to travel outside the village to access services which are not available on the doorstep.
We currently have 38 families on our register and can accommodate 24 children per session. These children and their families will be the first direct beneficiaries of this project but of course the project will continue to benefit children and their families for years to come. The wider community will benefit indirectly as we will be able to move out of the village hall, thereby making that facility available during the day for other community groups.
We have cared for and educated the pre-school children of Alne for 40 years. We have a clear understanding of the needs of the children and their parents. We have a very active management committee made up of parents and carers. We have a highly experienced and dedicated team of 6 staff. We have excellent links with North Yorkshire County Council and Alne Primary School, both of which supportive of our new build project.
