  • Need

Young Carers are rarely given the opportunity to take part in creative
performance opportunities due to the caring roles they undertake for family members. This project aims to give them all the support they need to take time out from their responsibilities and to find a voice for their often frustrating and difficult lives.

Over each three month period, 24 Young Carers will be supported to take time out and spend time creating music which gives them expression to their situation. They are given the opportunity to work alongside professional musicians and to create music that is resonant and expressive. Each project ends with a performance in an arts venue, in front of an audience of family members and friends.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Complete Phase 1 of "Listen To Us 2" for Young Carers in Wiltshire

» Run 6 days of creative music-making workshops with the Young Carers in partnership with Youth Action Wiltshire and musicians from Bath Philharmonia
» Have one performance for family, friends and invited guests at the end of the six days in an arts venue

Success will be...creating a lively and engaging piece of music that expresses the realities of the lives of Young Carers

    Aim 2

Complete Phase 1 of "Listen to Us 2" for Young Carers in Bath and North East Somerset

» Run 6 days of creative music-making workshops with Young Carers in partnership with BANES Carers Centre and BANES Music Hub and Bath Phil musicians
» Have one performance for family, friends and invited guests at the end of the six days in an arts venue

  • Impact

Young Carers given the opportunities of music creation are given an enhanced awareness of music as an aid in their personal, social and emotional development.

There is a risk that some of the participants will have to pull out of the project before the performance. We have dealt with this by planning six projects overall, thus enabling them to join another project once their circumstances stabilize.

We will be guiding the donors towards the blog which will be maintained by the Young Carers. In addition, all donors are invited to attend the performances.

  • Background

Statistics show there are at least 1,000 Young Carers in Wiltshire and over 3,000 in Bath and North East Somerset meaning there are many children who could benefit from our project. We have chosen locations and performance venues that are easily accessible for these carers and their families. Bath and the surrounding areas has a rich cultural history as well as wonderful venues that can give a real sense of occassion and acheivement for the performers and their audience.

The Young Carers will benefit as they are given a safe environment in which to find a voice to musically express the reality of their difficult situations. Family and friends will benefit from gaining an exceptional insight into the emotions of the Young Carers. The audience benefits as a whole from being exposed to the situations of this hugely under-represented sector of the community
