All Inclusive holidays - research project

Some tour operators have switched their holidays to all-inclusive packages. However, the implications for employees, other local businesses, the destination economy, and the tourist experience, throws up some serious questions about the sustainability and ethics of this tourism model.

  • Need


    Labour conditions in mainstream all-inclusive hotels are often worse;
    some local hotels forced to adopt all-inclusive model; other local businesses, such as restaurants, shops, taxi drivers and small guest houses, all lose out to the all-inclusive model, as guests are deterred from leaving the hotel grounds and All-inclusives can alienate tourists from the destination they are visiting and the people who live there.


    Tourism Concern will undertake further research to better understand the socio economic impacts of all inclusive on local communities. Raise awareness of the impacts with tourists and lobby the industry to ensure that where all inclusive are operated that they do so without negatively impacting local communities.

  • Impact


    In Majorca ghost towns have appeared due to local businesses closing down. A better understanding of the issues and guidance on how to make the all inclusive model more sustainable will positively impact local businesses, communities and ultimately tourists themselves.


    Risk that research report is dismissed by industry. Tourism Concern will ensure that research is based on academic research and reliable case studies.

    Why Us?

    Tourism Concern is the only charity actively campaigning on this issue and we have already undertaken preliminary research on the impacts of all inclusives. It is the only organisation in the UK to actively campaign on this issue. We are part of an expansive informal global network of NGOs and grassroots organisations challenging the unsustainable development of tourism, particularly in the developing world.
