Operation Christmas Love

Boxes of basic food, gifts and special treats for families in Eastern Europe so that they too can experience the joy and celebration of Christmas. It's a small way to bring hope to those in despair at one of the hardest times of year.

  • Need

Many families in Eastern Europe are so poor they can barely afford food on a day to day basis. For them Christmas means the same struggle as any other day. Many do not know the reason for Christmas, and even if they do, celebrating it is a luxury beyond their means.

Each box contains special treats like jam and biscuits, as well as basics like flour, oil, tinned meat and vegetables. This means that not only can the families celebrate Christmas day, but they also have some basics to see them through the hardest part of the year, when fresh food costs more. By supporting families in this way, we also open doors to discussing the truth behind the Christmas period with them, and ultimately to sharing the gospel.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Distribute over 30,000 OCL boxes to families in Eastern Europe.

» In each of our field countries we will be packing and delivering the boxes.

Success will be...delivering all of these boxes to the families.

  • Impact

This project gives hope. It shows that someone cares. It encourages them to keep going. We can demonstrate this by feeding back to donors the comments and thanks from individual recipients, both from previous years and from 2012/13.

There is a risk that bad weather could make delivery of the parcels difficult. However, our staff and volunteers are local to our field countries and so have experience of dealing with adverse weather conditions. In addition, all of the food is tinned or dried so even if parcels are delayed, they can be delivered at a later date and nothing will go to waste.

Donors to the project will receive a thank you letter after their gift has been made. We will also upload comments, photographs and feedback to our website and social media pages throughout December and January as we receive it.

  • Background

We work in six Eastern European countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine. On average 23.2% of the populations in these countries live in poverty. Moldova is the poorest country in Europe. Bosnia-Herzegovina is still suffering the effects of the civil war in 1992-1995, Ukraine the effects of the Chernobyl distaster.

The individuals who receive the parcels, the local economy (we purchase any food or goods needed locally for this purpose).
