Falconry For Schools

Getting children interested in the outdoors is crucial in teaching them to care about the environment and its wildlife. Falconry for Schools provides a fun activity for 8-14 year olds. It brings the school curriculum to life whilst offering an opportunity for children to experience a bird of prey.

  • Need

A survey commissioned by Natural England found that children today spend fewer than 10% of their play time outdoors. Instead UK children spend an average of 2.5 hours a day watching TV. As children are given fewer opportunities to play and learn in nature, they will understand it less.

Falconry for Schools will teach youngsters the skills of falconry and in doing so learn about the environment and conservation. Falconry for Schools aims to enhance learning using multi-sensory techniques and take learning outside of the classroom. The course can be used to enhance project work, science and history lessons, promote key skills or be used as an enrichment activity. Subjects such as housing and husbandry, bird crime, conservation and how this improves the environment is covered.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Inspire youngsters to re-engage in their studies and learn new skills.

» Run courses at junior and secondary level schools to enhance learning and broaden their knowledge and skills of a range of subject areas.
» The course is carefully mapped to the literacy and numeracy core curriculum and Key Skills Level 1 and Key Stage 2 for students from the age of 8-11.

    What success will look like

Success will be introducing the youngsters at 12 + schools annually to the skills of falconry whilst enhancing awareness and understanding of nature.

    Aim 2

To kick start at an early age an appreciation and empathy for birds of prey.

» To provide youngsters with a chance to fly, feed, handle and appreciate the bird's up close.

    What success will look like

Success will be providing young people with an insight into the ancient art of falconry.

  • Impact

The course will inspire an interest in nature and birds of prey in group of youngsters and help individuals develop a new found confidence in their abilities.

We will demonstrate the success of the project by monitoring and recording the number of schools and young people participating in the programme and gaining feedback from participating schools, to measure the effect of the course on a class of students.

Donors to the project will receive a progress report annually detailing the number of schools participated over the 12 month period, a summary of the impact of the course on youngsters and details of future courses.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

The Course Director has spent a considerable amount of time developing the programme so that it meets the needs of the school curriculum and will therefore be of educational value to children and schools. We have successfully delivered a similar initiative, Fishing for schools, to 30 + schools in England and Wales over the last six years and can therefore use these relationships to spread the word about the initiative throughout the country.
