  • Need

Nuffield is in a region called Jaffna, which suffered severely from the 26 years of civil war and several subsequent year of unrest in the country. The school looks after children aged 5 to 18, all of whom are blind and deaf, and, consequence of the war often maimed and orphans. Limited funding and the political climate in the country have left Nuffield in a state of disrepair and struggling to fund it’s operational needs.

Our commitment to the project involves building infrastructure (whether tangible or intangible), which will be self-sustaining and reach international standards. Our initial focus is on physical infrastructure to create this sustainability. We also highly value building effective relationships so that our projects and donors may be well connected. Our members have a commitment to making the best use of all our resources to enable us to help marginalised children.

  • Background

The school is located in Kaithady - a small town close to Jaffna in Sri Lanka. The region suffered during the 26 year civil war which ended in 2009. Since then, redevelopment in the region has been on the rise.

We view our opportunties to rebuild schools as a responsibility to not only rebuild the lives of children, but also as part of a responsibility to rebuild a whole community. We believe in the inherent value of human life and aim to create an environment for people to make the most of their abilities.
