Care Africa Network

The AIDS orphan crisis has resulted in hardship, broken families and displaced orphans throughout Southern Africa. The Big Idea is to promote initiatives to support and develop the African cultural family and community child care frameworks, to enable children to be well cared for by their families.

  • Need


    The African care system, where communities traditionally look after orphans, is unable to cope with the magnitude of the AIDS orphan crisis. Communities feel unable to support so many extra children, resulting in many orphans ending up on the streets to support siblings, or being sent to orphanages, which is so damaging to their future development.


    Many communities have started effective community development projects to support orphans, but dissemination of these projects across other countries in Southern Africa that would benefit from this knowledge is poor. This project aims to disseminate the information gathered during Phase 1 to communities across these countries, as appropriate, and provide some funding to start up income generating projects and farming practices to enable communities to support more OVCs.

    Aim 1

    Disseminate and support the best, and appropriate, community development projects.


    » 1. Re-visit the four targeted countries, assess different community needs in collaboration with NGOs and help them choose appropriate projects.
    » 2. Provide some funding to help initiate income generating and food production projects.

    Success will be demonstrated by feedback from communities, through partner NGOs, indicate success of the income generating projects funded.

    Aim 2

    Investigate whether other African countries would benefit from these community development projects.


    » 3. Collaborate with NGOs to investigate the need in other African countries.
    » 4. Initiate a programme to visit these countries to continue information gathering and dissemination.

    Success will be by other countries in Southern Africa inviting us to assess and support appropriate community development projects.

  • Impact


    The breakup of communities is halted, as communities are able to support more orphans.
    More orphans return to (or never need to leave) their communities, and receive more appropriate long term support. The need for orphanages is much reduced.


    There may be insufficient funds to support all the income generating projects identified. Political instability may prevent visits to some countries when required.
    Fundraising efforts are being increased, including bids for funding from Charitable Trusts. Collaboration and Partnerships with local NGOs will continue to be developed, allowing the project to continue ‘at a distance’, although this is not ideal due to communication difficulties.

  • Background


    It is sub-Saharan Africa that has been identified as being the most affected by the AIDS orphan crisis. On the advice of local NGOs, initially four countries identified as having the best community development projects have been targeted to learn about these local initiatives, and to disseminate them more widely – namely Lesotho, Swaziland, Kenya and Uganda.


    The orphans displaced by the AIDS crisis and the communities they come from will benefit from this project. The orphans can be returned to their communities and develop normally, the communities have a future, despite the loss of so many to AIDS.

    Francesca Simms (Founder)

    Qualified Child Mental Health Therapist and Social Worker, with extensive personal experience of living in Nigeria, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

    David Blomfield (Manager)

    Experienced in logistics, IT requirements and other support roles. Lived in Zambia, South Africa, and volunteered for two periods in Uganda.
