  • Need

Deaf children can have a significantly reduced ability to function at basic learning and social skills, with little awareness or understanding of their surroundings or safety, poor communication skills, and unfocused motor skills

We will provide sensory stimulation through adaptive music therapy which will directly increase self awareness and awareness of others, introduce deaf children to the absence or introduction of sound, increase attention, accuracy of motor skills, improve social interaction, provide the means to emotional expression and develop early listening and language skills

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To improve deaf childrens ability to develop age appropriate listening, language and social skills

» To provide daily music therapy as part of our educational curriculum, introducing music, song and dance as a positive learning experience

    What success will look like

The success of this project will be identified through individual learning plans for each child, focusing on the highest standard of language and social development

  • Impact

We will monitor and evaluate the progress of every child against their individual learning plan, identifying how music has helped to support learning goals and to what extent our children are able to leave us at age 5, ready and able to join a mainstream school of their choice

Music therapy has been an on going part of our curriculum activities for many years. Operational risk to this project could arise if our specialist teachers did not keep up to date with music therapy practice. We have introduced a partnership mentoring programme with other education and third sector agencies to share new developments and to regularly up-skill staff.

Each year The Elizabeth Foundation reports on the progress of its educational activities within its management accounts and is happy to provide specific project reports to donors. We also welcome visitors to our family centres to see our work first hand and to share in our achievements
