To work with with ‘new arrivals’ (migrants/immigrants) to gather stories. Use this research to inspire the content of a new piece of high-quality and language-free theatre for children and their families, which can be toured into rural and deprived venues around the Midlands.

Prejudice is often due to ignorance and lack of empathy of how it feels to be in a new environment. Paper Wings will address these themes in a broad creative way through performance & participatory workshops with young people.
We will work with new arrivals to gather their stories and build relationships, encouraging them to view the project they are part of.
We will tour into rural settings and/or areas of high deprivation.

Devise a high quality piece of theatre and linking workshop that addresses the themes.
Activities» Employ experienced artists and build in quality time for rehearsals and devising.
» During the rehearsal stages, perform to a group of children whose first language is not English, to gather constructive feedback.
Success will be... feedback from venues, write ups in the press, positive feedback on social media sites to confirm Paper Wings is a quality piece and is doing its job.
Tour into venues that are most isolated, deprived or most in need of the project
Activities» Work with local councillors and support networks to establish areas of greatest need. And contact these areas first.
» Look for additional funding to support these areas that will not be able to afford the full cost of a project.
Success will be... monitoring the statistics, number of EAL children reached, number of children with additional needs, Free School meals, etc.
After each performance invite feedback from the audiences, offering a safe, supportive environment.
Activities» Provide translators to enable any non-English speaking audience members to join the discussion. (The performance will not rely on language).
Success will be... informative debate and feedback from audiences and an understanding from children - placing them in the shoes of another person.
Find match-funding for a proportion of the performances to allow more people to see the show.
Activities» Additional funding to allow us to offer the show and workshop at a reduced price, thereby making it affordable to those most financially deprived.
Success will be... getting funding! And the number of take-ups from being offered a reduced price performance and workshop package.
Encouraging our new arrivals to be part of their communities by giving them ownership of this project.
By aiming the project at children, we hope to address negative behaviour at an early age.
Audience statistics gathered, future arts projects - monitoring who is attending and monitoring local attitudes to their communities.
The challenging content could provoke interesting discussions, however by providing translators and creating a performance that deals with these issues in a gentle way, we are not looking to provoke, but rather to get the children to consider what it might be like to be in a new and strange environment, using mask, music, puppetry, movement and beautiful imagery to address challenging themes.
Regular updates through social media sites and our website, as to how far we are in the project, where we are heading each day, who has booked us, feedback, updated images and any additional information that we feel our donors should know.

We will be focusing on the East Midlands for this project. In the last 10 years Lincolnshire has experienced a steady increase of new arrivals, which has lead to a number of cases showing intolerance, exclusion, ignorance and racism. The impact on the young people who experience this is damaging to their integration and progress, it affects them personally, their family and the community they belong to. The impact can be very long term.

Rhubarb Theatre is a professional children’s theatre company and registered charity based in the East Midlands. We set up the company to deliver creative, original, inclusive and theatrical experiences that stimulate our audiences and participants imaginations. Rhubarb Theatre works mostly in rurally isolated areas, locations suffering from social deprivation or with little cultural infrastructure. We seek to help those in greatest need of access to the arts and more likely to be excluded.
