Trafficked Young Women
Imagine what it must be like to be a young girl fleeing from persecution or a war zone having had direct experience of detention, torture or armed conflict? Or to be trafficked into the UK for domestic slavery or sexual exploitation?
The Refugee Council is the only organisation in the UK that has a dedicated team of advisers working directly with these (known as separated or unaccompanied) refugee children. This team includes a specialist adviser who supports girls and young women, one third of whom have been trafficked into the UK. They may be pregnant and have sexual health needs on top of the needs they have in common with all separated children seeking asylum. Some of these young women already have babies mainly as a consequence of rape or prostitution.
