Dormitory and Specialist Teaching Facilities
To renovate an existing single storey building to provide suitable dormitory facilities for the senior girls within a new upper storey and provide specialist Home Economic teaching rooms on the ground floor.
7 months in the dry season
Friends Of St Josephs School For The Hearing Impaired Makeni Sierra Leone
The existing dormitory facilities for the senior girls are cramped, dark and entirely unsuitable.
The school has an urgent need for specialist teaching rooms. Vocational education for less academic hearing impaired children gives them the skills to take their rightful place in society.
One of the school buildings is a single storey extension in urgent need of repair. This has been identified as being suitable for development for this project.
The upper storey of the new/renovated building will provide the necessary dormitory facilities and a carer's room. The lower floor will be used for the urgently needed specialist teaching rooms.
The existing single storey extension is under utilised due to the poor state of building. By renovating this building the three problems will be solved.
To provide suitable dormitory facilities for the senior hearing impaired female students.
Activities» By constructing a two storey building out of the existing one storey extension.
Success will be...demonstrated by the senior girls moving into their new facilities.
To provide specialist teaching rooms for the less academic hearing impaired students.
Activities» By renovating the existing one storey extension.
Success will be...demonstrated by the immediate use of the specialist teaching rooms.
To fully utilise the existing building which is almost inhabitable due to damp and dark conditions.
Activities» By renovating and rebuilding to turn it into a two storey building which will house the senior girls dormitory and specialist teaching rooms.
Success will be...demonstrated by the completion of the first two aims!
The senior hearing impaired girls will be accommodated in facilities more appropriate to their age and development.
The less academic hearing impaired students will learn additional vocational skills to give them a greater chance of finding employment.
A building which is almost completely uninhabitable will be fully utilised.
Only part of the funding materialises so that the building work cannot be completed. We will ensure that this does not happen by not commencing the project until all the funding ha been secured.
Will will supply progress reports, photographs of our project, budgets and where necessary appropriate receipts. Trustees and supporters of the Friends of St Joseph's visit the school at least once a year and will report back accordingly..

The school is based in Makeni, Sierra Leone. Makeni is a town with an estimated population of 105,000 in central Sierra Leone. It was very badly affected by the civil war and still has no mains electricity or mains water. Roads around and out of Makeni are in poor condition and the transport of goods to and from Makeni is difficult. The school was virtually destroyed in the civil war with only the walls left standing. It has been gradually rebuilding over the last ten years.
The older hearing impaired female students who currently sleep in unsuitable dormitory facilities.
Less academic hearing impaired students will gain valuable vocational skills.
St Joseph's School for the Hearing Impaired has played an essential role in the care and education of hearing impaired children since 1979.
