    Need

Our centre is based in Hackney, in an area known as 'Murder Mile' due to gang crime. Young people who come to us after school and at weekends live in the Top 1% of deprived housing nationally. 39% of the young people who use us live in poverty and are eligible from Free School Meals. As well as suffering from socio-economic disadvantage, young people who use Leaside tell us they have a lack of access to outdoor sports facilities, positive role models and interesting things to do after school.

    Solution

We give young people who live in overcrowded areas, access to fun, positive outdoor activities after school and at weekends, including canoeing, mountain biking, orienteering and raft-building . We also take inner-City kids on outdoor activity trips all over the UK - for many this is their first time out of Hackney. We also deliver accredited courses to these young people, giving them skills and qualifications to secure employment in the leisure industry or to become our future volunteers.

  • Background

    Location

The project will take place at Leaside’s centre in Hackney and at outdoor activity locations all over the UK

    Beneficiaries

150 young people aged 8-25 will benefit from our project. Our young users are predominantly drawn from Hackney which is in the top 10% deprivation bracket in the UK. 29% of young people in Hackney are not in employment, education or training (NEET). 40% of primary and secondary school pupils in Hackney are eligible from Free School Meals. Young people who are referred to us also have a lack of access to outdoor sporting opportunities as well as a disaffected attitude towards school.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Our location, staff and volunteer resources and facilities are ideally based to support those young people most at risk of becoming NEET and / or at risk of committing criminal offences. Using sport as the hook, Leaside offers an alternative to young people, encouraging them to become positive role models in their community, stay in education, develop their confidence, leadership skills and ambition through sport and become volunteers for the future.
