Raising Hope Scholarship Scheme
Alongside our current oprhanage project we are also establishing a scholarship programme to support eligible children in the town who wish to continue their education from age 16.
Charity information: The Raising Hope Foundation
Those children that are capable enough to make it through the struggling school system in Santrokofi often then have no way to access higher education as the fees are simply too high and there is no one to help them pay them.
We aim to grant scholarships to these students, assisting them with tuition fees, the cost of books and also accommodation. We will also provide them with guidance as to which courses are available and potential job opportunities following completion of them.
To enable more Junior School finishers to go on to Senior School and university.
Activities» Setting up a formal scholarship scheme, promoting it and developing an application process.
What success will look like
Securing the funding needed to develop this programme and expanding to allow more and more students the opportunity to access further education year on year.
To create a cycle where those we have helped then come back and encourage future generations.
Activities» All scholarship students will be expected to assist in our orphanage home on school vacations and to use their new skills to help where possible.
What success will look like
An increase in scholarship students assisting us with our summer schools programme.
It is hoped that in the long term this scheme will have an impact on the work demographic in Santrokofi, with a higher percentage of people in skilled jobs. This will help to increase wealth and therefore services in the town, eventually leading to a decrease in the number of children classified as needy or vulnerable.
Our main stumbling block has been the inability to accurately predict how much it will cost per student per year as the information provided from schools is often chaotic and subsequent fees are later added on. We are designing a letter for students to submit to their schools explaining our scholarship scheme and requesting all of the information on fees and costs required for us to budget and make payments on time.
Donors will receive a quarterly newsletter and termly reports from the scholarship students will be available via our website. If a donor has sponsored a particular student then direct mail/ e-mail contact will be encouraged.

Santrokofi, Volta Region Ghana. A traditional town in a poor area, in which the number of students passing Junior School (aged 16) is extremely low. The number of students then being able to go on to further education is even lower. Last year 2 students passed, both of whom we are now sponsoring through Senior School.
The town as a whole will benefit from this project. The main beneficiaries will be the children themselves, who will have the opportunities to access higher paid jobs. This will lead to more wealth being generated - benefiting the elder generation as children will be in a position to care for them, and the next generation whose parents will be able to provide for them independently.
We have been working in Ghana for 3 years now, and are working alongside a charity who have been working in this field for over 15 years, with previous successes in other towns. Through running summer schools in the town we have built relationships with the children, the school and other adults in the town.

As organiser of the summer schools Kinza has built relationships with the children likely to benefit. She will now organise and promote it.
