Santrokofi Orphanage Project

August 2009 - August 2013
Charity information: The Raising Hope Foundation
Santrokofi is a traditional town with over 100 children currently registered as orphaned or needy. Our partner charity has been assisting them with donations of clothes and books but can not finance a permanent home. Extended families can do little to help as they can barely afford to support their own children. Often these children end up being passed from relative to relative and having to farm for a living. They have little access to education and healthcare and no stability and security.
We are financing a home that will house the 60 children in the greatest need. The home will provide them with a permanent place to live, access to clean water, washing facilities, reliable meals and access to and support with education. It will also be a place of support for single parent families, in terms of providing care before and after school allowing them to work whilst still keeping the child in school and living at home with them.
To provide a home with facilities for 60 children
Activities» We are currently building a new orphanage home that includes male and female wings with dormitories for both older and younger children.
What success will look like
To complete the building work as soon as possible, getting the children in to a secure environment.
To enable orphaned children to access education
Activities» In agreement with the village chiefs the children will attend the local school. We will provide them with books and uniform as well as study support.
What success will look like
100% of the children in education, with a lower absent rate (aim of less than 5%) and a higher yearly pass mark (currently barely above 0%)
To support other struggling families in the town
Activities» We have acquired a large plot of land for the home, allowing us to accommodate more children in the day time, both outdoors and in study rooms.
» Train our staff to provide emotional support to the parents
» Set up bursaries to support these families in tough times with food and school fees etc.
What success will look like
No child in the town having to work alongside their parents and no capable parents having to give up their children.
The town of Santrokofi is currently blighted by poverty and a high rate of alcoholism amongst the adult population. Our project aims to change the outlook of future generations by providing an environment in which education and further education can be the focus.
Our success will be demonstrated long term through an increase in the number of children going on to further study, either at university or vocational training and a gradual decrease of poverty levels in the town.
Previous projects in this town have failed due to cultural clashes with the town chiefs. From the beginning we have worked alongside the chiefs, consulting with them as to the best way to tackle the orphans situation. By working with a local charity we have an intermediary and also someone to explain to us any potential disagreements in culture, particularly important due to the towns problem with drinking. Volunteers are fully briefed before arrival and we aim to include locals at every stage.
Donors receive a quarterly newsletter detailing progress with the project, and information regarding any events and fundraising activities.

Santrokofi is a traditional village in the Volta region of Ghana. It is governed by village chiefs and is situated near the town of Hohoe and the Togo border. The majority of the population work either as farmers or market traders. Following the decline of the cocoa trade in the area many families have struggled to make ends meet.
The immediate and main beneficiaries of this project will be the orphaned children and then also other struggling families, which currently is a large proportion of the families in the town. It is envisaged that in the long term the wealth of the town will also improve as more people take skilled jobs.
We have been working in Ghana for 3 years now, and are working alongside a charity who have been working in this field for over 15 years, with previous successes in other towns. Through running summer schools in the town we have built relationships with the children, the school and other adults in the town.
