  • Need

Kirkwood’s 16-bed in-patient unit is located in the oldest part of the Hospice building. The layout and in-built services available have remained largely unchanged in the past 25 years.

With major advances in the early diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening illness, patients are now living longer post-diagnosis. As care becomes more long term, patients have more complex needs and additional facilities and equipment are required.

Our new unit will upgrade the facilities and environment for in-patients and their families, while retaining the warm, homely, relaxed atmosphere of the Hospice.

The refurbishment programme and extended facilities will make it easier for our staff to carry out their duties and spend more time with patients, and it will ensure that patients get the care and dignity they deserve.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To raise £3million to cover the cost of the extension and refurbishment of the in-patient unit

» You can sponsor a brick - your message will be inscribed on a brick and laid in our path in the hospice garden leading to and around a new labyrinth.
» You can join us for the Kirkwood Hospice trip on the Northern Belle by Orient-Express from Huddersfield to Edinburgh on 28th September 2012.
» Become a Hospice Champion - can you, your group or company raise £1000 for the appeal over the coming year? Preview of the new unit included!
    » Corporate sponsorship opportunities available

    What success will look like

Success will be... when the new unit opens to welcome patients and families in June 2013, continuing to provide excellent specialist palliative care.

  • Impact

The project will enable us to continue to provide care, free of charge, for the next 25 years and beyond.
It will provide more family facilities and will work better for the clinical teams.

We have considered financial risk and contingencies are in place.

We will keep donors updated via an e-newsletter and will invite them to previews of the new unit.
Our website will be updated regularly.
