Protection of Women Human Rights Defenders
Women are often the main targets of violence in countries affected by long standing conflict and repression, even after conflicts have 'ended'.
Peace Brigades International (PBI) UK Section
Women play a vital role in their communities by challenging past human rights violations, advocating for victims of human rights abuses, and challenging discrimination and marginalisation of vulnerable groups. However, they face numerous obstacles to carrying out this vital work including harassment, intimidation, forced disappearance, and the use of threats against their children and families. A protective international presence is needed to ensure that they can continue their work.
PBI will offer protection to at-risk women human rights defenders (HRDs) through the work of around 68 volunteer observers working in four countries who offer physical protection by the side of HRDs (up to 24 hr if needed) backed up by extensive advocacy efforts to alert authorities at the local, national and international level of our work.
The project will increase the safety and confidence of women HRDs
Activities» Around 68 international volunteer observers will offer protection to at-risk women HRDs in Colombia, Nepal, Guatemala and Indonesia.
Success will be the fact that no women HRDs have been harmed by our side and they have been able to carry out their work.
Women HRDs be able to play a vital role in their communities by challenging past human rights violations, advocating for victims of human rights abuses, and challenging discrimination and marginalisation of vulnerable groups.
Since we work with individuals threatened for their work we engage in regular risk assessments to determine the levels of protection that are needed. If an emergency situation arises, we activate our Emergency Response Network that will take immediate action in life threatening situations.
We will thank them and send them our Annual Review which highlights our work with at risk women HRDs.

We will provide protection to at risk women HRDs in Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala and Nepal. We will also engage in international advocacy in the UK and at EU level on their behalf.
Around 200 at risk women HRDs who represent key civil society organisations including lawyers' collectives, women's rights organisations, environmental groups and indigenosu communities will benefit. Many more individuals who receive their support will also benefit.
PBI has offered protection to at risk women HRDs for the past 30 years and is a recognised organisation in the human rights sector for our work. We work only at request of local organisations and individuals. Our grassroots approach helps to ensure that those who need our protection most are able to receive it.
