Provide a Library for a School in Sheno, Ethiopia
LUCIA would like to raise funds to build and equip a library for Saria School in Ethiopia. This would provide access to books and information for 465 pupils at the school which they don't currenly have. It is hoped that the wider community will also benefit from using this facility at weekends.
Estimated 12 months
LUCIA (Life Uplifted by Change In Africa)
Saria school only has 4 classrooms for 465 pupils. At present the Saria region in Woreda has no access to information providing knowledge and enlightenment. This is something LUCIA would like to address. LUCIA believes that education is the answer to lifting people out of poverty. LUCIA further believes that by achieving the 2015 Millennium Goal (MDG) for education it will address and improve most if not all of the other MDGs.
A library would provide additional teaching and resources not at present available to the children. It would maximise the education opportunity for all members of the community, providing access not only to children at the school but also to the rest of the community who wish to broaden their knowledge. Books on a wide range of relevant subjects will be provided and the focus will not only be on academic achievement but also education on wider issues such as ethical & moral behaviour.
Giving equal opportunities to both boys and girls
Activities» Girls and boys will have equal access to the facilities and books. Girls are currently disadvantaged as education is not so freely available to them.
» The community will be able to use the facility out of school hours with access available regardless of age or gender.
Success will be monitored over a number of years by measuring the number of girls attending school and evaluating their progress. Local NGO and head teacher will monitor this.
To help alleviate ignorance and poverty.
Activities» Use knowledge from books to develop life skills and broaden opportunities to improve commercial prospects.
Success will be measured through the success of self help groups through local NGO. LUCIA will continue to have a presence within the region.
To raise awareness of health issues and harmful practices
Activities» Educate about sexual and reproductive health, family planning, womens/human rights and provide information on dangers of harmful traditional practices
Success will be measured through the decrease of female genital mutilation, size of families and gained awareness of human rights.
Through education there will be more success stories for people running small businesses. Self help groups (cooperatives) will be created to enable both women and men to learn a profession or trade so that more families will be able to support themselves. They will have learnt skills such as banking, saving and investment for the future and will no longer need to use loan companies with excessive interest rates.
to be completed
There will be quarterly reports from Ethiopia which will be posted on LUCIA's website www.luciacharity.org.uk. There will be an interim visit and report and a final report from LUCIA on completion
