  • Need

Deaf children are at a natural disadvantage with communication and are at a high risk of feeling isolated with a significant minority developing mental health issues. Hearing siblings can feel left out as the deaf child receives one to one attention from parents and professionals. Children of deaf adults may struggle with their communication and sometimes assume the role of interpreter. Parents of deaf children can be overwhelmed and not understand their choices.

Activities in school holidays provide a focal point to bring together children and prevent them from feeling isolated. Involving the whole family helps siblings and deaf children with different methods of communication interact normally. Children develop confidence in their communication and are encouraged to participate. There is always an opportunity for parents to get together and chat and share experiences to better understand their choices.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide access to activities for deaf children.

» Bi-lingual staff and volunteers and an interpreter will support communication, explain activities and encourage participation.

Success will be...children enjoying things that they might not otherwise experience.

    Aim 2

Support all communication methods, support children and families to find the best way communicate.

» Provide BSL support, create an environment where children with different communication methods can mix, provide personal communication support.

Success will be...seeing families communicate effectively and children understanding and being understood.

    Aim 3

    Provide information and support

» We provide information through our email newsletter, facebook groups and website as well as at an individual level.
» We provide support and signposting to families in person, by email and over the phone

Success will be...families being better informed and having a supportive network and access to the services they need.

    Aim 4

To bring together parents to share information and experiences and support each other.

» Provide adequate supervision of the children to give parents the chance to mix. Provide a buddy for new families if required to help them mix.

Success will be...hearing parents say they have found out new information or made new friends and how that has helped them.

  • Impact

Families will be better informed about their choices and better supported. Children will develop friendships and have access to a range of experiences. Children will develop their identity and be confident.

    Each activity is risk assessed.

We can provide statistics and feedback from families in any format that a donor requires. Donors are welcome to visit the office or we can arrange for a donor to visit an activity session.
