Project information

Britsh Seahorse Survey

We want to continue the successful work the trust has done with British seahorses into the future. Through our amazing team of volunteers we managed to get both British seahorses protected in law and we have set up the National Seahorse Database.
We need to keep this vital project going.

It is a continuing project

  • Need

Seahorses are under threat worldwide and this is because of overfishing, habitat, loss and development in coastal areas. We aim to understand even more about seahorses to secure the long term future for them.
By continuing our project here in the Uk and opening it into the wider European context we can understand more about the poor future seahorses face.
Seahorses are vital to the natural world and are an important part of the eco-system we need to know more abut them.

Although we have extensive amounts of knowledge about British seahorses we need to know more so that we can advise the authorities on the best way to protect them and the environment they live in.
By increasing the work of the British Seahorse Survey to include Europe we can gather more data to present to the authorities so that they c an put into place measures to protect seahorses, their environment and the future of the planet.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

We need to gather more information and data about seahorses throughout Europe and the UK

» Gather data through dive surveys and by searching records held by other organisations

    What success will look like

Success will be through the quantity and quality of the data we gather and by gathering new information and confirming existing knowledge

    Aim 2

After collating this data we need to inform the authorities to put into place protective measures

» Collate data into reports to disseminate the information

    What success will look like

Success will be measured by the authorities being informed and their acknowledgement of the problem facing the seahorses and their environment

    Aim 3

Share our knowledge with the wider community to let everyone know of the problems facing seahorses

» Update our website to post our regular reports and share our knowledge with others.

    What success will look like

Success will be achieved by sharing our knowledge as far and wide as we can

  • Impact

We aim to get Europe wide protection for seahorses and their habitats that they live in. We aim for this to be by enshrining seahorse protection into member states legislation and into European legislation.
Our hope is to secure the long term future for the seahorses and the marine environment for many generations to come.

Loss of the natural world is the biggest risk to the project and by reporting our findings far and wide we aim to get those in authority to listen to us and to make a difference.
If we do not generate sufficient funds to keep the project going we will not be successful in our aims, to achieve this we are putting out appeals for funding where ever we can

Feed back to donors will be through our Facebook page and via the trusts website which is very comprehensive and informative. We also produce news letters per annum and donors can access these via the website

  • Background

Our project concentrates primarily around the UK but we are also looking to European areas to gather more data to complete the overall picture

The people of Europe will benefit from this project as we aim to put forward information so that their coastlines, species (especially the seahorses) and the marine environment will be protected for the future for all.
