  • Need

    Need

Many of the 30,000 community groups and charities in Wales which strengthen local communities are very small and often don’t have a member of staff let alone a fundraising team and so fall below the radar of donors. Major UK and Welsh charities attract the lions’ share of charitable gifts, so the Fund for Wales helps those who love Wales to reach smaller community groups, projects and charities by gathering a community of donors who give centrally, to a Fund which donates locally across Wales

    Solution

By building a sustainable endowment fund to benefit smaller charities and community groups across Wales, the Fund for Wales is a source of long-term funding: a donation to the Fund for Wales is a gift which keeps on giving.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Enabling young people and promoting education, enterprise and life-long learning

    Activities

» Invite people to show their love for Wales by making a donation to the Fund for Wales which makes grants across the country under the 5 project aims.

By awarding grants to community groups, charities and projects to support their work in strengthening local communities, and celebrating the impact of their work.

    Aim 2

Building cohesion and confidence in communities

    Activities

» Invite people to show their love for Wales by making a donation to the Fund for Wales which makes grants across the country under the 5 project aims.

By awarding grants to community groups, charities and projects to support their work in strengthening local communities, and celebrating the impact of their work.

    Aim 3

    Improving physical and mental health

    Activities

» Invite people to show their love for Wales by making a donation to the Fund for Wales which makes grants across the country under the 5 project aims.

By awarding grants to community groups, charities and projects to support their work in strengthening local communities, and celebrating the impact of their work.

    Aim 4

    Nurturing heritage and culture

    Activities

» Invite people to show their love for Wales by making a donation to the Fund for Wales which makes grants across the country under the 5 project aims.

By awarding grants to community groups, charities and projects to support their work in strengthening local communities, and celebrating the impact of their work.

    Aim 5

    Protecting our environment

    Activities

» Invite people to show their love for Wales by making a donation to the Fund for Wales which makes grants across the country under the 5 project aims.

By awarding grants to community groups, charities and projects to support their work in strengthening local communities, and celebrating the impact of their work.

  • Impact

    Impact

As an endowment fund, the Fund for Wales will increase over time and provide a stable, sustainable source of grant-funding for Welsh community groups long into the future. Success will be measured through: the size of the endowment fund; the number, range and amount of grants awarded; the impact which the grants have; the variety of people who join the community of donors to the Fund for Wales.

    Risk

Risks include: the Fund for Wales taking a long time to reach its preliminary target of £250,000 (this has been achieved); the difficulty of achieving profile for a Welsh Fund (this has been mitigated by the agreement of HRH The Prince of Wales to be its Patron); low interest rates meaning little available for grant-making in the early years (the Community Foundation in Wales leverages additional grant-funding).

    Reporting

The Fund for Wales has its own e-bulletin and website which features stories of givers and receivers – thanking donors and featuring the work of funded projects.
