Home visiting support

Home-Start Perth provides non-judgemental practical and emotional support to parents with young children. Volunteer parents provide this support in the families home so we would like funds to continue this work and to train new volunteers to join our team.

  • Need

Families with multiple births, mothers with post-natal depression, parents who are lonely, isolated or depressed or who have relationship problems or who may have children with special needs – the list is endless. Our aim to build resilience and the familys ability to cope and to prevent the family reaching crisis point.

By providing a volunteer who is a parent or who has parenting experience to offer non-judgemental practical or emotional support to the parent and to play with the children. Our volunteers offer a variety of support including helping the family to get out, help set boundaries and routines, provide a listening ear, model parenting or just to be an extra pair of hands.

  • Impact

Early intervention can help to prevent long term issues for society such as crime and substance use. Seeing the family through a difficult patch will improve the outcomes for all family members and helps to prevent the family reaching crisis point. Through the family reaching a point where they no longer need support from Home-Start Perth we can demonstrate that the volunteer support has been effective.

Our main risk is changes in funding which reduces the number of families we can support. With less money we are unable to recruit and train as many volunteers and thus cannot support the increasing number of families referred to us.
So far we have dealt with these risks by reducing the number of families we support which means that some families are not getting the support they need.

We can provide reports as and when required detailing the number of families supported, the number of volunteers, details of recruitment of volunteers and what support they have been offered in terms of training and supervision.

  • Background

Home-Start Perth supports families thoughout the whole of the Perth and Kinross area.

Our project will benefit the whole community. By being able to support families within their own home this will impact upon their citizenship and ability to join in with other activities in their community thus benefiting a wider society. In the longer term it is hoped that the early intervention that Home-Start Perth provides will also enable the children we support to integrate more easily into society themselves.
