  • Need

    Need

Children with Down's Syndrome are typically delayed in their speech and language, present with specific difficulties and have a specific learning profile which needs to be considered when delivering speech and language therapy. The co-workers have been trained to specifically cater for children who have Down's Syndrome in order to support their speech and language development.

    Solution

Co-workers have received and continue to receive targeted training from Symbol UK who specialise in speech and language therapy for children with Down's Syndrome. The speech and language therapy group is run weekly for children and their parents in order to maximise the benefit of the therapy. Parents carry on the work done at the therapy group in their daily life.

  • Impact

    Impact

Starting with pre-school children and helping their speech and language development will enable these children to fully develop their speech and language abilities. Being able to communicate and understand lies at the heart of comprehension of the world around them and it enables them to access their school curriculum, form relationships and lead fulfilled lives in the future.

    Risk

Withdrawal of supervision by qualified speech and language therapist.

In this case we will have to employ an independent speech and language therapist which will incur additional costs for the charity

    Reporting

Yearly update of numbers of children seen and progress documented in regular files for each child.
