  • Need

There are currently very few dedicated services for people with autism in the West Midlands area. Resource provision typically focuses on learning disabilities or mental health issues, and individuals with autism often miss out on opportunities to enjoy specialist resources. With approximately 10,000 people with autism in the Birmingham area, the need for resources decidated to these individuals is huge. There is also a big demand for autism specific training from families and carers.

We are hoping to create a Learning Resource Centre, which will offer a small library, study area, and computer facilities, a sensory room, an informal social cafe area for people to drop-in and use, and a training suite.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide the identified facilities at our new Head Office by April 2012.

» Design the faciilities in consultation with service users.
» Ensure that all possible service users are aware of the new facilities via a marketing strategy.
» Launch, monitor and evaluate the usage of the new facilities.

Success will be creating the facilities by April 2012 and then them receiving regular and consistent usage by both current and potential service users.

  • Impact

The project will create long-term facilities for people with autism in the Birmingham area, which will all have the flexibility to be used for a variety of different activities. By creating this suitable, cost-effective space, it will free up our resources to enable us to offer a greater number and a greater range of activities for our service users.

There is a short lead-time attached to the fundraising, against which we have a contingency plan to stagger the creation of the new facilities to accomodate receiving the funding in stages.

    We will produce monthly reports.

  • Background

Our charity offers services across the West Midlands, and this project would welcome service users from across the region. The service user base will predominantly be from Birmingham, in which there are approximately 10,000 people with autism.

Many of the service users we currently support including those from our residential sites, our supported living services and our community services. It would also benefit individuals who we currently do not support who are looking for dedicated social spaces for people with autism.
