Need
Need
Nationally 5.4 million households are living in fuel poverty; almost half of those are aged over 60. Older people living alone are most at risk and across the whole of the West of England 559 vulnerable people died from causes directly attributable to the cold and poor living conditions.
Solution
The WFP is a universal payment made to everyone over the age of 60 on the electoral roll, during November and December so just a small percentage of these made as donations to the Surviving Winter Appeal would make a huge difference to those in need. 227,200 people in the West of England are eligible to receive the WFP & if 1% of them donated their winter fuel payment (based on lowest amount received e.g. £200) then £454,400 could be raised across West of England.

Aims
Aim 1
Increase funds supporting older & vulnerable people experiencing fuel poverty in the West of England
Activities
» Raise awareness of the appeal so that those able to can donate their Winter Fuel Payment
What success will look like
Success will be to raise a substational amount of money that can be distributed to address the rising issue of fuel poverty across the West of England
-
Impact
Impact
Educative/preventative work on increasing energy efficiency will be carried out by some of the organisations supported which will give long term impact on fuel poverty.
Risk
The risk is that we are unable to support organisations working with older & vulnerable people in fuel poverty because not enough people feel able to donate their winter fuel payment. The Appeal has previously been run successfully by other Community Foundations and this year a national campaign has been launched so exposure is greater.
Reporting
We will keep donors updated on progress throughout the Appeal and report on casestudies where the work has made a significant impact to those living in fuel poverty.
