Providing for the future: education

We think that education is a basic right that should be guaranteed, but there are still many places where access to education is a privilege.

With your help we can ensure that education is more easily accessible, and boost the life chances of Zambian children.

  • Need

At SOS Children, we are carrying out new projects in Chipata, the main town in Zambia’s Eastern Province. Here the adult literacy rate is only 48% compared to the national average of 68% .

Education is vital for breaking the vicious circle of poverty – it goes hand in hand with development. Children who have been to school are more likely to grow into self-sufficient and healthy adults.

    SOS Children’s project activities:
    • Construct a nursery school as part of the new Children’s Village now being built in Chipata
    • Add a 6-classroom extension, and a toilet block, to the existing Damview Community Primary School (built by local parents)
    • Consult with school staff to identify teacher training needs
    • Supply teaching materials
    • Provide Nursery and Primary School scholarships for children from vulnerable families in the community
    • Initiate an adult literacy programm

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Give children in Chipata, Zambia the chance to learn and develop.

» • Increase the school’s capacity & reduce class sizes • Improve the quality of teaching • Enhance pupils’ attendance rates

    What success will look like

Success will be an increase in the quality of the education and teaching provided and increased access to education for the community.

  • Impact

Our projects help build sustainable communities with the aim of preventing child abandonment. Increased access to edcation will enable more opportunities and aspirations for children growing up in Chipata.

There’s a strong link between a woman’s level of education and the survival and wellbeing of her children - the importance of education goes well beyond the benefits to the individual.

There are no risks associated with this project.

Donors will receive the latest update from Chipata.
