The Kids Cookery School, Acton

In brightly-coloured, purpose-built kitchens, children and young people aged 3-16 years learn how to cook tasty and healthy dishes from fresh ingredients. KCS is all inclusive and works with children from disadvantaged backgrounds, ethnic minority groups and special needs groups.

This an ongoing project that continues to work with some of the neediest children in London

  • Need


    •Only 1 in 4 children eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day
    •The British Medical Association predicts that by 2020 over 30% of children aged 2-15 will be clinically obese.
    •Treating obesity and related illnesses costs taxpayers £3 billion a year


    2,500 young people per year can learn to cook healthy,delicious food from scratch and the importance of a healthy balanced diet at KCS, Acton. Over 75% of the places are given on a subsidised basis to young people who are economically or socially disadvantaged. Over 25% of students have special needs (physical, learning or behavioural) and over 50% are from minority ethnic or refugee groups. At KCS, children are taught by professional chefs in a environment which is fun challenging and inspiring

    Success will be giving every child the opportunity to learn how to cook and lead a healhty lifestyle regardless of their backround.

  • Impact


    Our cookery projects educate children and young people about healthy eating and how to eat a healhty balanced diet not through telling them, but through showing them in a practical approach where children can learn a life skill for themselves whilst also gaining social skills and having fun in a creative and encouraging environment! We hope to tackle obesity rates through teaching children how to cook healthy, nutritious and delicious food.


    There is no risk- This is a tried and tested recipe for a healthier generation!


    We would be happy to report to donors and let them know how we are getting on with the classes at the school and the progress we have made.

  • Background


    The Kids' Cookery School is based in Acton, West London and is a purpose built fully wheelchair accessible building.


    •We actively promote social inclusion – 50% of our students are from black, minority or refugee groups
    •We specialise in working with children with special needs – over 25% have physical, learning or behavioural difficulties
    •We address the nutritional needs of low-income families – over 75% of students attend on a free or subsidised basis

    Fiona Hamilton-Fairley CEO And Principal

    Fiona leads a team of 3 full time staff and a group of volunteers. Her roles vary from all things office based to leading a cookery class.

    Alexandra Smith

    Alexandra is the PA and office manager at KCS and is responsible for the organisation of projects.

    Lee Briggs

    Lee is the Operations manager at KCS and is responsible for risk assessments, and helping out with the premises.

    Robert Nathan

    Robert is one of many kind volunteers who donates his time to help assist in cookery workshops at KCS.
