More education = Healthier families, in Ethiopia
‘To change the world, invest in adolescent girls'. If an adolescent girl in Africa progresses to secondary education, stays in school, remains healthy and gains real skills, she will marry later, have fewer, healthier children and earn an income that she’ll invest back into her family and community.

In the Ejere District of Ethiopia girls from rural areas are under-represented in the one High School and are much more likely to drop out than their male counterparts. Many young people live too far away from the High School to walk there every day so they have to rent rooms in the town, which often puts girls at risk. Girls who do walk long distances to school are at risk from assault, abduction and forced early marriage. Others are kept at home for financial reasons or to help with the family
Since 2011 For-Ethiopia has been supporting girls from outlying villages and enabling them to continue their education beyond primary school. After 3 years 72% are still in education,16% are employed and only 9% married. This is a real achievement as without our support over 80% would be strugglling to support young families in a subsistence economy. But the lease will soon be up on our rented house so we want to build our own hostel (we already have a site) and expand our programme of support
Develop our scholarship fund and award bursaries to motivated girls seeking secondary education
Activities» Continue to support our local Project Management Committee as they select award winners and supervise the building of hostel accommodation for them.
» Continue to work with our local Project Committee to develop our effective, equitable, secure and reliable procedures for the distribution of funds.
» Continue to develop our current procedures for the effective monitoring, review and evaluation of award winner's well-being and academic progress.
Success will be the selection and retention in education of at least 48 female award winners from remote rural villages, who otherwise would not have access to secondary education
Build safe accommodation for 32 girls near the local High School on a site donated by the community
Activities» Complete the preparation and fencing of the site near the High School in Addis Alem and construct a hand dug well to ensure a reliable water supply
» Complete the design, tendering and contracting process for the construction of the first accommodation unit for 16 girls, to open in September 2015
» Supervise the building of the accommodation unit; furnish, equip and staff it, drawing on support offered by committed members of the local community
» Raise funds for the building of a second accommodation unit for 16 girls and a workshop, to open in September 2017
Success will be demonstrated by the opening of good quality, well-equipped, accommodation supervised by an effective house mother, whose residents are developing well in every way
Help girls living away from home to stay safe, learn more effectively and remain in education longer
Activities» Provide pastoral and mentor support for award winners based in the hostel and other girls attending the High School, who are living away from home
» Provide safe,supervised study facilities and tutorial support for girls, available in the evenings at the hostel and in the Library at the High School
» Arrange, through the Project Management Committee, for the recruitment of guards who will escort female students home after evening study sessions
» Provide solar lamps for female students living in accommodation where it is difficult or impossible to access electric light after dark
Success will be achieved by an increase of at least 10% in the average attainment and at least 50% in the retention rates of the girls from rural areas supported by the project
Improve conditions for girls from rural areas at the High School renting accommodation in Addis Alem
Activities» Develop the established programme of training for landlords in Child Protection and other issues relating to students' attainment and well-being
» In partnership with the High School and local education authorities, monitor the quality of accommodation rented to students from rural areas
» Work with the High School and local education authorities to develop a landlord registration scheme
» Encourage students, particularly girls, only to rent rooms from registered landlords
Success will be achieved by the attendance of at least 30 landlords at the training programme and a significant reduction in the number of girls unable to study after school
Reduce the incidence of forced early marriage in rural communities in the Ejere District of Ethiopia
Activities» In partnership with local authorities and the High School, hold workshops for community leaders and parents focused on the efficacy of later marriage
» In partnership with the Women's Affairs office and the High School, invite suitable female role models to attend workshops and visit local communities
» Consider the efficacy of later marriage in the mentoring support and group tutoring provided for award winners and other students at the High School
Success will be achieved if at least 90% of award winners complete their secondary education before marrying and reports of the incidence of early marriage reduce by at least 10%.
Success will be demonstrated by more equal representation of girls in Grades 9-12 at the High School in Addis Alem, a reduction in the drop-out rate for girls of at least 20% and a significant improvement in the standards of girls' achievement. In the Ejere district local authorities will play a bigger role in girls' welfare and there will be significant reductions in the incidence of forced early marriage, the size of familes, infant/child mortality rates, child/family poverty and malnutrition
Award winners may drop out before completing their secondary education or not make appropriate academic progress. Effective pastoral and academic support in the form of group tutoring and individual mentoring, provided by the Project Manager and others, will reduce this risk. Similarly award winners will be helped to use their cash support effectively. A strong partnership involving the relevant local authorities, the High School and community leaders will promote the chances of success.
Using monthly updates from Ethiopia, we communicate with donors through email newsletters and regular reports on the For-ethiopia website. Updates are provided at all fundraising events held in Bristol and the surrounding area. Trustees will visit Addis Alem and report back to donors once a year.

The Ejere District of Ethiopia is 55km west of Addis Ababa in the Oromia region. With a population of around 100,000, it is a rural area centred on the town of Addis Alem. The majority of the population are subsistence farmers with few other sources of employment. Poverty is both widespread and deep. There are over 30 primary schools but only one secondary school.Transport is difficult as there is only one tarmac road - from Addis Ababa, through Addis Alem and west to Ambo, the regional capital
In the shorter term, the project will benefit the life chances of the 48 girls who receive awards and their families and communities. We hope this project will provide a prototype for improving the quality of women's education in rural areas of Ethiopia and there has already been a great deal of interest from local and regional authorities. Evidence shows that a child born to a mother with secondary education is 60% more likely to survive than one born to a mother with only primary education.
For-ethiopia has been working in the Ejere District since its foundation in 2004. We have good local knowledge and excellent relationships with local communities and local authorities. With a proven track record of success in development work, we were designated a model NGO by the regional authority in Oromia in 2008. There are no other NGOs doing similar work in this part of Ethiopia. Our Programme Director in Ethiopia was born and brought up in Ejere and is very well known and respected.
