July 2010 - July 2014
Charity information: Slough YMCA
Many people in the community feel unsafe, have no vision of the future, and indeed do not feel welcome or part of the community. We deal with many children at risk of becoming NEET or involved with crime, and to reduce this trend is something we aim to do. We want to improve the sense of community within Chalvey by including all groups and all ages.
We are working with local schools, and Corporate businesses to offer activities for Children after school, including Sport, Music, Arts and Crafts, and Trips, at the same time doing community clear ups, paint work and general volunteering. BY including these children in projects hopefully they will start taking ownership of some of their work.
To improve the Community feeling in Chalvey
Activities» Tae Kwon Do classes for children each Weds , held in The Hangout, run by a GB coach an resident of Chalvey
» Community Projects, Painted shops in the Chalvey Ladbrooke Rd site, have just completed a clear up at Stabmonk Park with CA Assoc.
» Xmas party and trip to theatre Royal windsor to see Sleeping Beauty to involve children from Chalvey and Montem school.
» To run Music classes in conjunction with Slough Music and Aiksaath each Monday for 2 years, mainly for the Roma community in Chalvey
What success will look like
Success will be monitored from feedback by Chalvey Forum, Partnership, Montem school, Thames Valley Police, and the Residents of Chalvey...We will seek feedback from the children
We hope to reduce the feeling of neglect, safety, lack of community cohesion. Improve the chances for many Children who are at risk of becoming NEET, and look to give them hope for the Future. To reduce the crime in Chalvey, and also hopefully the entrance route to crime, to foster a better felling for our older community members, who mention they feel unsafe at the moment..
We opened in 2010 and so far have had little funding, so we have to raise everything ourselves. We are looking for Grants, Tender opportunities, but as we cannot employ staff until funding is received, and we have minimal staff within The YMCA Hostel which means most of the work in The Hangout is Voluntary. We are approaching Big Lottery for funding to allow employment, and sustainability for the project.
We will report to donors via our own website, and YMCA England, via Media, and via a newsletter to be introduced shortly. With some of our Corporate donors we do have regualr meetings for feedback.

The Hangout is situated about 100 yards away from the main YMCA Hostel at 30 Ladbrooke Road, Chalvey, Slough SL1 2SR, with The Hnagout being No 2.
It is opposite the newly refurbished Chalvey community centre. Chalvey is in teh top 13% for deprivation in the country, and Chalvey ward in the most needy wards of Slough.
The area suffers from particularly high levels of deprivation including high unemployment and crime and poor educational attainment among young people, Chalvey was ranked in the lowest 13% in the 2010 IMD. The area is home to a large number of recent immigrants and has a high transient population with low skills and limited prospects. Many children face parental neglect, resulting in truancy, poor nutrition and roaming the streets engaging in anti-social behaviour. We include all faiths/groups
Slough YMCA is part of the wider YMCA movement. We have been operating in the Slough area since the 1930’s, and have a staff and volunteer team dedicated to and experienced in supporting the needs of young people up to the age of 30.
Specific skills and expertise we can call on includes:;
Our CEO has over 30yrs experience of youth work including Youth exchanges, Barnardos, Scouts, Red cross, Swimming Coaching, and is supported by many YMCA and Community volunteers
