Second Floor Extension
By extending to the second floor of their current building Third Floor Gallery can double its exhibitions programme as well as establishing premises for a digital darkroom and to engage with communities in South Wales.
January 2012 - January 2013
Charity information: Third Floor Gallery
South Wales has a long tradition in photography and a large number of groups engaged with it. However, the access to photographic exhibitions and the opportunities for new communities to engage with photographic practice are limited, with only one other photography organisation in an area with a population of 2.1 million people.
Third Floor Gallery would expand from one gallery space to two gallery spaces, a digital darkroom and dedicated premises for community usage. This expansions would mean that a larger number of people would benefit from the gallery and development of photography in South Wales would benefit from space dedicated to newer, emerging artists.
To create and operate a second gallery space.
Activities» Sign a one year lease for the second floor of the building.
» Refubish the space to create a dedicated gallery with lighting, advertising, etc.
» Create a second programme of exhibitions and events to run through the year.
Success will be... continually running a second gallery space. The target is to double the number of exhibitions and visitors.
To create a dedicated digital darkroom.
Activities» Create a dedicated room for a large scale photographi printer, computer and editing software that we received as a donation.
» Attract users for the premises and operate it through the year.
Success will be... to have an operative digital darkroom with fifty yearly users.
To increase community engagement.
Activities» Increase our relations with young people in Cardiff and with photography students by organisation of exhibitions, workshops and events.
» Temporarily dedicate through the year the second gallery space for these engagement activities.
Success will be... to expand the understanding of photography of at least one hundred young people.
Together with other venues and institutions in Cardiff and surroundings this project could lead to South Wales being a UK reference for photography. In the long term it will also nurture a network of young photographers.
This change will be assessed by peer review.
The main risk has traditionally been running out of funds to pay for the lease of the main gallery space. We have dealt with it by raising donations and sponsorships.
Our Facebook page updates daily, and informs on all the activities and successes of the gallery. If anybody wants to contact us directly please send us an email.

Third Floor Gallery is located between Butetown and the recently developed Cardiff Bay, in Cardiff. The gallery is located on the loft of a XIXth century building with public access on Bute Street. This is a neighbourhood that mixes new developments with regeneration areas.
The gallery and its activities are open to any visitor. Visitors come from all areas of Cardiff and South Wales. A smaller part of visitors (circa 10%) come from further afield, like Mid Wales or England. We also work proactively with college and university students studying photography and arts.
Third Floor Gallery has been organising exhibitions at a very low cost for two years, and in this time has established itself. The numbers of volunteers have also raised, with around 35 people regularly giving their time to staff the gallery, carry on design projects, raise funds, organise or hang exhibitions, etcetera. We believe that expansion will increase the chances of participation of all our volunteers and get the best out of them.
