Education Loans in Mumbai Slums (ELiMS)

Mumbai’s total population is around 13 million and the slum population accounts for around 50%. Population density is high in Mumbai slums, but access to formal education is extremely low. ELiMS will provide education loans to girls living in the slums to attend primary and secondary education.

  • Need

Although primary and secondary public education is free, sending a child to school is not and the levels of education in some slums are particularly low, especially for girls. Children from underprivileged and poor backgrounds in particular are often excluded from formal education. A lack of basic literacy and numeracy competencies is a dangerous mix that will most probably lead to a future full of hardships and an unstable economic status.

ELiMS will ensure that young girls living in the slums of Mumbai will be able to attend primary and secondary education. We want to ensure that every girl has a chance to escape poverty, rather than being trapped in the vicious cycle that poverty creates.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide basic education for girls living in the slums of Mumbai

» We want to empower women and support them in gaining the necessary economic stability needed to effectively care for their families.

At the pilot project stage we plan to provide an average of 400 loans to families living in Mumbai slums on a continuous basis.

  • Impact

ELiMS will increase access to formal education for girls of underprivileged backgrounds.

If the family cannot repay the loan/instalment no collaterals are taken. We emphasize on careful pre-selection of eligible borrowers. We are confident that families will be able to repay the loans during the 24 months period, but any loss will be absorbed by the project.
School attendance will be closely monitored through certified letters from the educational institution.

Funders will be kept updated on a regular basis with information sent on request.
