  • Need

Our current site dates back to 1421, and many of the buildings have had very little in the way of refurbishment work since the 17th century when the site became a School. The music department in particular is literally crumbling away and directly threatens the School’s ability to function. One of the most significant issues in our current home is the lack of soundproofing - a key issue for our young musicians.

With the aid of the Northwest Development Agency, the School has been able to purchase one of the very few remaining undeveloped sites in the City Centre, adjacent to the current School campus. This has created a once in a lifetime opportunity, which we are using to create a brand new School Building, with purpose-built music facilities, including a Recital Hall and Concert Hall for large scale performances.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Build a new home for Chetham's School of Music

» Develop the site adjacent to the current School site into a purpose-built music school

    What success will look like

The new School is due to open in 2012.

  • Impact

In addition to being an incredible space for our students to develop their musical abilities, the building will be an important new music venue for the city of Manchester. Within the new building, we will hold two free concerts every day, open to all members of the public, bringing classical music closer to the community. There will be also be a regular series of concerts held throughout the year, advancing even further our contribution to the cultural life in Manchester.

This is a capital project, so the risks are that the build could fall behind schedule, for example due to bad weather over the winter season. However, even through the heavy snowfall of winter 2010/11, the project managed to stay on schedule, so we are confident that we will be able to open in 2012.

We send a copy of our Donor Newsletter to everyone who has supported the appeal, updating donors on all the latest on the appeal.

  • Background

We are based in the heart of Manchester, although our students come from all over the world. Chetham's is the only specialist music school in the North of England.

Our students will be the primary beneficiaries of the new facilities, but the building will also create an exciting new performance venue, which the concert-going public will benefit from enormously. The new Building will also have a dedicated Outreach Centre for our work providing musical outreach with the public and various community groups.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are the UK's largest specialist Music School, and we feel that our students deserve to be able to work on their music in facilities that are fit-for-purpose.
