  • Need

For those experiencing domestic abuse, knowing where to go for support and advice can be very difficult. They could be isolated from friends or family, scared of their abuser or worried that nobody will believe them.

The Dove Centre offers support and assistance to women experiencing domestic abuse. The Centre can help women to offload their worries and concerns, providing them with safety strategies to keep themselves and their children safe, and can refer women to available refuge accommodation if they want to escape. The Centre also provides counselling post-domestic abuse to help women to overcome problems such as depression and anxiety that experiencing domestic abuse can cause.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide women affected by domestic abuse with support and assistance.

» Provide a telephone helpline, informing women of available refuge bedspace to ensure she is able to escape quickly and with greater ease.
» Provide women with a drop-in space so they can talk to support workers to gain information and advice.
» Provide a counselling service, enabling recovery from abuse.
» Provide a legal surgery every Wednesday, so women can receive qualified advice around any housing or childcare concerns they may have.

    What success will look like

Success will be receiving over 200 drop ins to the centre and by measuring the improvements to wellbeing and understanding of safety strategies to each service user.

  • Impact

The project will improve the lives of women in Southend affected by domestic abuse. We will demonstrate the success of the project by monitoring and evaluating the responses given by service users; we hope to see a decline in domestic abuse incidents in Southend.

The risks to this project include a shortage of funding and something happening to the Dove Centre which makes it unusable. We have a pro-active programme of fundraising to ensure that the project can continue. We regularly carry out inspections on the building, and if necessary, will run the service from another centre in Southend if the building becomes unusable.

We will provide donors with an annual report of the project, recording what has been achieved. We will also invite donors to celebration and fundraising events.
