Community Transport

To find and buy premises for our staff, 7 minibuses and 3 adapted cars to ensure the stability and assure the future of our essential transport charity. Our present arrangements are in jeopardy, and we are spread over 3 sites, and 2 districts.

  • Need


    We have been operating since 1973 and been forced to move 3 times, and at the same time expanding to meet the growing need. It is essential we stabilise our operation and guarantee our continuance with confidence to allow us to plan for the future. The need for Community Transport has never been greater, with the loss of subsidised and private services impacting the vulnerable members of our society to an even greater extent. Our present setup is threatened and we need to find an alternative.


    We will be able to have a single base to operate from and be able to maintain and secure our vehicles knowing that the future is assured. We are already expanding our operation to include a Bognor Regis and Chichester Districts’ wide Dial-A-Ride service. This could be threatened without the security and stability that we seek.

    What success will look like

    Success will be the survival of this essential charity, and the ability to improve and expand our services, without increasing the modest charges to our users.

  • Impact


    Our success is imperative, with the growing numbers of vulnerable people, the impending loss of bus routes and services from the private sector, and the probable loss of free bus passes to our local residents. To gauge our users' needs we complete a monthly form that logs how many passengers we have transported and where to. From these we are able to assess any gaps in the service that we provide, our success rate, and any failings. We would be looking to increase these figures over time.


    Having been established for nearly 40 years I am confident that we can continue to flourish, having the security of tenure. We do however continue to monitor our progress and respond accordingly. We continue to seek funding and also keep ourselves in the public eye in order to increase our client base and keep Sammy viable and affordable.


    We could keep funders aware of our progress by email or news letter, either electrionically or hardcopy. This could be in whatever time frame was requested.

  • Background


    We operate in the Chichester and Arun Districts of West Sussex, a rural area with complex transport arrangements. It is estimated that the area we serve has in the region of 70,000 people over the age of sixty-five. In addition it is estimated 30,000 suffer from limiting long–term illness. We are looking to increase our client base to include a much larger proportion of these, and hence improve the health and welfare of the individuals and the region in general.


    We are for some, the only way they can leave their homes. Recent years have shown increasing numbers of older people living in West Sussex. In 2008 there were estimated 25,000 people aged 85 years or over in the County. It is projected that by 2026 it will rise by over 50%, meaning 39,100 people 85, or over. There increasing numbers of people in West Sussex living longer with disabilities, learning difficulties and limiting long term illness.

    Why Us?

    Sammy Community Transport Ltd has been in existence over 35 years and has always spread its resources as thinly as it can. Serving the elderly and disadvantaged of the area there is a careful balance to be struck in keeping the fees charged to our clients at a minimum that they could afford, against the need to provide continuity in our activities. We are in an ideal position to continue contributing to the needs of the community with our experience and expertise in very challenging times.

    Chairman of a very pro- active Board, a recently retired Solicitor, who is fully involved with the running of the Charity.

    Treasurer and retired Bank Manager, who has his hands firmly on the purse strings.

    Fred Melloy

    Trustee/volunteer driver, retired from a transport environment and very hands-on if not driving our vehicles, keeping a trusty eye on their condition.
