The Employment Service

Since 1992, Blind in Business has helped blind and visually impaired people into good jobs. We help people into jobs in marketing, law, IT, anything but driving a bus.

Each year we work with 120 graduates to help them find employment.

    Need

    Finding employment for blind and visually impaired graduates after University is often hard. The competition for all graduates is excessively high. For the candidates we help, they sometimes need direction, they might need to learn of the latest access technology, so they can learn how to cope in the workplace. By giving each candidate an individual package, they have a plan to work towards.

    Solution

    We will work with 120 graduates in a year, to help them find good jobs. We expect 60-65 of them to find employment. Throughout the UK.

    Aim 1

    To give blind undergraduates and graduates the confidence to apply for good jobs.

    Activities

    » To work intensively with these graduates to give them the skills they need to cope in the workplace.
    » We will work with each graduate to help them understand what employers want in their application forms and assessments.

    Success will involve more graduates having interviews for jobs. And hopefully securing employment. Coming off state benefits.

    » We will offer these graduates mock interviews with employers.
    » We will run events specifically for graduates and employers.

    Success will involve graduates using these skills in their first job and gaining further skills with their employer.


  • Impact

    Impact

    We will run events specifically for graduates and employers, so both groups understand how to treat one another. Giving employers the confidence to take on blind people and giving our candidates the understanding of what employers are seeking.

    Risk

    Because we have run this service since 1992 we are fully aware of the risks involved as a small charity. Our Board of Trustees meets every quarter to discuss potential risks and provide us with the correct controls.

    Reporting

    We wish to write reports to funders on how the service has succeeded within 12 months. We would also like donors to meet with us in our London office where they can meet people we have helped into employment.

    Since 1992, we have run this service, helping over 600 graduates into good jobs. We are the only charity in the UK doing this work.

    Visiting University Careers Officers and Disability Advisors to help people understand and help us find the people we need to help.
