Bansang Upper Basic library
The current library has rotten shelving, out of date books and a leaking roof. We want to completely refurbish it and make it a place students want to go to learn.
January 2012 - June 2012
Charity information: Bansang Educational Appeal
We are trying to improve access to knowledge for all the students in Bansang. Many can't afford to buy their own textbooks, which are not available freely as in the UK. The dusty home environment with lack of electricity means students find it difficult to study when they reach home.
By providing a library with the needed resources and an environment which encourages learning students will be able to study between lessons and after school, improving their knowledge and ability to contribute to their community's development.
Refurbish and equip the Library at Bansang Upper Basic School
Activities» Fundraising in link schools in Essex
» Work along side school staff and local tradesmen to provide a comfortable environment for study.
» Source both local and international books for the library.
What success will look like
Success will be evident when students are able to use the library and it becomes a resource the school are proud of.
We hope that children's interest in learning will grow, their knowledge will improve and they will acquire skills to contribute to their own society's development. Initially we hope to see an improvement in national exam results from students at the school.
The risks are in ensuring the work gets done for a reasonable amount without funds going astray. By working closely with staff over a length of time, involving staff and the local community with decisions the risk of funds not reaching their intended target is minimised.
Monthly updates will be reported on our website. Donors can also choose to receive monthly reports by email as well.

Bansang is a town 200 miles inland in Gambia West Africa. It is a thriving town, but has suffered from lack of public money over the years. There are very committed teachers at the school who struggle with inadequate resources.
Students at the school and surrounding schools will be able to study in comfort in their spare time, to use resources that haven't been available previously. The local community will also be able to make use of the facility.
We are a charity that has been intimately involved with education in the area for 3 years. Before this time our founder developed links with the school and a good working relationship with its staff. This allows us to ensure funds are well spent and frequently monitored on our regular visits to see children sponsored by the charity.
