November night shelter

We currently operate a winter night shelter between January and March. We would like to extend the operation of Hackney Winter Night Shelter to November, from November 2012. This will cost around £20,000 per year.

  • Need

    Need

We break the cycle of homelessness by using Hackney Winter Night Shelter to identify homeless people in the area. While the shelter is open our Link Worker finds accommodation for as many of our guests as possible. Then our link worker and befriending team provide year-round support and advocacy for our guests to help them stay in their accommodation.

    Solution

The streets can be a very social place. Being accommodated - while safe and secure - can be very lonely. It is tempting to want to return to the streets to re-connect socially.

Our link worker and befrienders support our guests in their accommodation, helping them to build new social networks that help them to remain accommodated. We are so successful that we now have ex-guests helping to run the charity and its services.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To increase the capacity of Hackney Doorways to break the cycle of homelessness.

    Activities

» By extending the opeing period of Hackney Winter Night Shelter to enable us to access more homeless people who need our help.
» By increasing the scale of our befriending scheme to allow us to provide support for more ex-guests once they are in accommodation.

Continuing our 70% succes rate at breaking the cycle of homelessness for a larger group of people than we currently help.

  • Impact

    Impact

This will help reduce the problem of homelessness by ensuring that our guests do not return to the street. We act as a turning point in their lives.

We will demonstrate success by increasing the number of ex-guests that remain in accommodation and work.

    Risk

Our existing structures handle the risks effectively
    - befrienders are carefully selected and trained for their work
    - financial risks are managed by the board of trustees
    - we use links with groups such as Thames Reach, Crisis and Homeless Link to ensure we consistently deliver our service at a level that is above the industry standard.

    Reporting

We publish an annual report which is available to all donors. Major donors that have contributed to a specific project are sent separate reports that show the impact of their donation.

  • Background

    Location

The project is located in Hackney and provides either accommodation or referral to homeless people right across London.

    Beneficiaries

The project directly benefits homeless people in and around London. They are usually homeless because of relationship breakdown, lack of a support network following job loss, mental health issues, discharge from the services, release from prison or immigration reasons.

Society benefits from these people being turned around at this difficult time in their lives and put back on an upward trajectory - before their homelessness becomes entrenched.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Our charity currently succeeds in accommodating and supporting 70% of its guests. The national average for this kind of work is around 30%.

We attribute our success to our individualised approach and the fact that we recognise our guests as people for whom homelessness is a difficult time in their lives, not their permanent condition. We help them to get over this difficult time and re-engage with society and their social networks.

    People

    Our Volunteers

Hackney Doorways and Hackney Winter Night Shelter relies on volunteers to run the bulk of its operation.

    Our Venues

We rely on shelter venues donated one night per week - mainly halls attached to churches, mosques and synagogues in and around Hackney.

Our Link Worker And Support Workers

Our link worker works year round and support workers are taken on when the shelter is open, to provide seven-day support for our guests.

    Our Befrienders

Our team of volunteer befrienders extend the reach of our link worker by providing support and advocacy our guests with low support needs.
