As part of our Iannis Xenakis focus at this year’s hcmf//, we would love to present a performance of 'Polla ta Dhina' by Xenakis for children’s choir and orchestra. We need to raise £10,000 to make this happen – giving local children a unique performance opportunity with a professional orchestra!
November 2011 - November 2011
Charity information: Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival
There is a strong tradition of music making in Huddersfield, but not all children and young people have equal access to these opportunities. They also have limited opportunities to explore new music or perform alongside large-scale ensembles.
Polla ta Dhina by Iannis Xenakis is rarely performed, possibly because it is a relatively short piece (about 6 minutes) which requires large forces (over 60 people) to perform it!
We will bring together children and young people from the local area to form a special children's choir and explore the music of Iannis Xenakis in more detail. Working with the Manchester Consort, they will perform Polla ta Dhina at Huddersfield Town Hall as part of hcmf// 2011 on Sunday 27 November.
Perform Polla ta Dhina at hcmf// in November 2011 with a specially formed local childrens choir
Activities» Run six creative workshops to prepare for the performance. Participants will learn about Xenakis’ music through fun, practical music-making activities
Success will be a high quality performance to a large audience, as well as a meaningful learning experience around new music for participants.
We hope to bring about the following long-term changes for participants:
New vocal and performance skills
Improved confidence and self-esteem through performing as part of a prestigious event
New ensemble and team-work skills as a choir
Knowledge about a key figure in new music
New experience of singing with an orchestra
Success will be defined as half of the choir (10 children) going on to join other vocal ensembles in the area.
There is a risk that we could fail to recruit enough children to take part in the performance. We have dealt with this risk by fostering good relationships with local schools and music organisations to help us spread the word.
Funders of this project will receive an invite to the performance on Sunday 27 November and will receive a full project evaluation after the project, as well as an audio recording of the performance.

Huddersfield is, perhaps, an unlikely location for a major international music festival, as it is not a major city. It may have begun as a result of the location of the founder director but it is now firmly entrenched in the fabric of the Festival. In 2008 hcmf// carried out an audience research programme that confirmed Huddersfield as an important element of the Festival.
The primary beneficiaries will be 20 children who have not the opportunity to take part in a performance of this nature before. Other beneficiaries will be the audience members, who will hear a rarely-performed work presented in the grandiose setting of Huddersfield Town Hall.
hcmf// aims to make new music accessible to increasingly varied audiences and participants. Our Learning & Participation programme plays a vital role in forging and developing relationships with a wide variety of local communities. hcmf// offers creative musical experiences for participants whilst providing direct contact with high-profile, high-quality artists. Since 2006, hcmf// has worked with over some 6000 participants across 46 projects, and in 2010 was short-listed for an RPS Music Award
