New forest in Ghana
Climate change is a global problem that hits hardest the poor in Africa. We aim to engage supporters in Europe and America to partner with local people in Ghana taking action against some of the worst effects of climate change.
January 2012 - December 2016
Charity information: Climate Stewards
In Africa climate change means floods, drought, hunger, refugees and conflict. It hits first and worst those who have done least to cause it and who have fewest resources to cope.
There is no quick fix to climate-related problems in Ghana but trees help in many ways. Trees shelter crops, prevent erosion, restore soil, stabilize watersheds, provide food & fuel as well as habitats for wildlife. And as they grow they absorb carbon dioxide from the air, the greenhouse gas driving climate change. We work with local people to plant many trees.
In 2012-2016 to plant and care for 24,000 trees on 60 hectares in Ghana to absorb 7500 tons of CO2.
Activities» With our partners in the country we will support local communities in Ghana, some of the poorest in the world, to plant and care for the trees.
Success will be visible as the trees grow and transform the landscape. Our Ghana partners will provide reports and photos of the planting which we will share with supporters.
In Europe & North America to raise funds, explain climate change and inspire commitment to action
Activities» In the UK, Europe & North America the project will recruit 600 regular donors each giving about £15 ($25) per month.
» We will build relationships with our donors to improve their understanding of climate change & what they can do.
This project will restore the land in multiple areas of Ghana and transform the lives of the people who live there. We have a long term relationship with A Rocha Ghana who will continue to monitor progress.
Innovative projects face many risks. The biggest we face is choosing to operate in areas where climatic risks such as drought, flood and fire are high. We cannot avoid such risks if we want to work where the needs are greatest. However we do design the projects to minimise the risks. For example, we specify fire breaks and plant on multiple sites so our eggs are not all in one basket.
We report to donors via our website and by email updates.

We plant in the northern and central regions of Ghana in West Africa. The north is very dry and bare. It looks like desert. Central Ghana is greener but also vulnerable. Both regions have been exposed to deforestation, droughts and floods in recent years.
The people of northern Ghana are Muslim. Here there is both impressive dignity and great poverty. In central Ghana most people are Christians. They are hard-working and show an entrepreneurial spirit.
Climate Stewards combines the expertise to run projects in Africa with trustworthy partners on the ground. Our Christian basis underpins a strong relationship with the Christian population of central Ghana and a good understanding with the Muslims in the North.

Project Manager. Competent & inspiring! At his recent wedding he gave seedlings to all guests so they could plant trees to offset their travel.
