Certificate in Youth Policy
IARS currently offers four interns the opportunity to have their activities and learning accredited at a university level. In partnership with London Metropolitan University we have designed the work-based Certificate in Youth Policy.
September 2010 - December 2011
Charity information: The IARS International Institute
Many young people leave school without the qualifications they need to go to university. Our Certificate in Youth Policy allows our volunteers to have their volunteering accredited at a university level.
Our Certificate in Youth Policy offers young people the opportunity to undertake a period of supervised work based learning relevant to an area of youth policy. It is hoped that this experience together with the certificate will position students for subsequent employment and/or further education and progression.

What success will look like
Success will be...
Four interns will pass both modules 1&2 in Certicate in Youth Policy.
Enabling these young people to have their learning accredited at University level will allow them to progress to other University courses at London Metropolitan University. The course offers progression into a number of named degrees within the Department of Applied Social Sciences.
• BSc (Hons) Community Sector management
• Foundation Degree Individual & Community Empowerment (over 21)
• BA (Hons) Criminology
There is the risk that young people studying for the Certificate will drop out due to other commitments. This risk is especially apparent when working with young people who have finished school with very few qualifications and who are from marginalised backgrounds.
We will provide a report on the achievement of all interns, including their final grades. Interns will produce a written report and oral presentation at the end of their studies on their learning achieved and activities they have engaged with.

The project takes place at our office in Stockwell, South London, and at London Metropolitan University.
The main beneficiaries of this project are the interns studying for the Certificate in Youth Policy. The course will enable them to enrol on university courses that would have previously been unavailable to them. The course enables them to explore further education in a working environment. Working as an intern for IARS gives young people the opportunity to learn what it is like working for a social policy think tank and will hopefully help them secure employment in the future.
Independent Academic Research Studies exists to do exactly what it says on the tin. Through a process of empowerment that involves training, peer mentoring, team work and confidence building, young people at IARS become capable to produce evidence-based policy that is informed by “Independent”, “Academic”, “Research”, “Studies” that they themselves carry out. The fact that the charity is particularly interested in young people who wouldn't be offered this
