Big Adventure for more children and young people

Access to outdoor education is known to have a lasting and transformational effect on young people's lives. The Big Adventure project aims to get more young people camping. At camp they will experience fun and challenging activities that builds self esteem and confidence.

  • Need

    Need

    For many families sending their children off to camp causes many issues relating to the affordabaility of kitting out their child with new footwear, sleeping gear and wet weather gear. Peer pressure means the young person wishes to attend the adventure, and familes get into conflict when equipment cannot be borrowed or purchased, resulting in the young person missing out on the activity.

    Solution

    The Big Adventure will develop a pool of camping equipment that enables all young people to attend the activity. This resource will have sleeping bags, roll mats, torches, hiking boots, rucksacs and wet weather clothing. Full and partial kits can be borrowed to enable more young people to access camps and residential experiencies, meaning all young people can take part in their big adventure.

    Aim 1

    Establish Big Adventure resource kits

    Activities

    » Put together 30 resources kits that are appropriate for young people aged 6 to 14 and store these at the Scout Headquarters ready for issue.

    Success will be no young person unable to go on a camping expedition because they don't have the personal kit necessary to take part.


    Aim 2

    Run Big Adventure residential experiences

    Activities

    » During 2012 run a minimum of 5 camping experiences for young people to join in, one of which will be a family camp for all family members

    Success will be a greater number of young people taking part in camps. 95% of all members having taken part in at least one camp.


  • Impact

    Impact

    The project will reverse the barriers that young people face in attending Big adventures, enabling more young people to gain the benefits of outdoor education that camping trips bring.
    We will demonstrate the success of the project by monitoring the number of young people using the resource kits and collecting stories from families on how this makes a difference.

    Risk

    There is a risk that the take up of the kit is limited due to family pride issues and young people not experiencing the Big Adventure. We have established a project champion who will use her experience of tough times in the family budget and talk directly to other families reluctant to make use of the facility, here she will emphasise the positivities of young people taking part in adventure activities.

    Reporting

    Funders of the project will receive a termly newsletter on the project, detailing the activities achieved and plans for the future. We will also produce statistics showing the use of full and part kits.

    Location

    The North East of England has a rich tradition of camping. Baden Powell ran his first experimental camp in the region. The North East of England is able to accommodate a wide range of opportunities for young people to camp. these camps can be varied to be urban, rural, accesible by public transport, magical locations, each location different and memorable.

    Beneficiaries

    Young people will benefit. Families are struggling to release funds to purchase appropriate kit for new activities. By using a central store of kit, families will enable their young people to engage with big adventures that introduce them to outdoor education. We want all young people to experience the magic of their own Big Adventure.

    We have successfully run Big Adventures for the last 40 years. We continuously evolve the activities to be fun, magical and different. Young people wishing to be involved in such activities has increased 30% in the last 2 years, so much so, that the membership of the group now exceeds 110 members, its highest ever number.

    Carol Baggaley

    Carol specialises in running sleepovers and Big adventures for six and seven year olds. She has 20 years of experience.

    Matthew Crumbley

    Matthew has a passion to deliver Big Adventures for the 8 to 10 age group. As the youngest member of the team he brings new insights and creativity.

    Colin Raistrick

    Colin has 30 years of experience and has the skill of turning a spark of an idea into a reality. He enables more wild country camping to happen.
