Transforming the Day Treatment Unit /Chemotherapy
Undergoing Chemotherapy can be complex and lengthy. Some patients attend 2x week for months. Our chemo Unit is drab and forbidding. We hope to transform it with a warmer Reception area and wonderful art which welcomes, is positive, engages and comforts.
Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Charitable Funds
The Day Treatment Unit consists of one long horseshoe-shaped room accommodating 30 chairs and 12 beds. Currently there is little artwork or distractions. The windows are very high so patients can't look out. The furniture is not ideal. There has been feedback that the room is not welcoming or comfortable. When patients are coming for quite distressing treatment it is hugely important to improve their experience as much as we can.
With new comfy seats and an extensive art programme under the unifying theme of landscape: bringing the outside in. The Chemo team aims to:
- create a more welcoming and positive feel to the Chemotherapy suite;
- install wonderful artwork and space that will provide some comfort and distraction for patients
- provide an environment sensitive to patients and those working in and visiting it.
- create a more pleasant, restful space that lifts spirts and promotes healin
To improve the space with an art project to make the experience of undergoing chemo less awful.
Activities» To commission an engaging and sensitive art project. Also to create a special 'welcoming' area - important for those coming for the first time.
Success will be...the more positive experience of those undergoing chemo. We will measure this through patient and staff feedback to establish how effective the changes have been.
The Cancer Centre serves 2.5m people. There will be thousands of patients each who will benefit from a softer and warmer environment for their chemotherapy experience.
Obtaining consents to make the necessary improvements to the space.
Donors will receive the results of the patient and staff feedback survey.

The Chemotherapy Suite is located at heart of the Oxford Cancer Centre in the Churchill Hospital. The hospital is one of Europe's leading research and teaching hospital.
The Oxford Cancer Centre takes complex cases from around the country, serves the Thames Valley Region and its catchment area comprises 2.5m people. It is a new, purpose built building which opened in 2009. However, the Chemo suite is situated in a less than ideal surroundings with high windows and little natural light.
The Cancer and Haematology Day Treatment Unit at the Cancer Centre opened in 2009. Approximately 80 patients attend daily requiring treatment for varying malignancies and benign blood disorders. The treatment regimens (e.g. chemotherapy / blood transfusions) can be complex & lengthy, taking anything from 30 minutes to several hours, with some patients attending twice per week.
