To provide grant funding opportunities for children and young people to develop their skills, talents, hobbies and interests through public, private sector and community support where lack of funding(unemployment, low income) prevents them from pursuing opportunities.

  • Need


    Low levels of family income significantly restrict the opportunities for young people to engage in activities that will support hobbies, interests, skills and talents. Many families live in social housing with a high proportion of single parent households with income used for essential items. Costs to sustain opportunities (particularly for a young person developing an expertise) over a longer period can also be prohibitive. There are no statutory funding sources to alleviate the problem.


    The income will provide applicants for the grants with access to funding for relevant training, coaching , equipment etc. The Trust will promote the availability of grants through its existing and extensive network of schools, youth facilities and young people support services. The grants will enable young people to access development opportunities which would otherwise not be accessible, providing positive ongoing experiences and a vehicle for the development of burgeoning talent.

    Aim 1

    To provide financial support to access opportunities and progression for young people


    » To develop a local fundraising campaign to maximise the match funding opportunity of The Big Give Christmas Challnge campaign in December
    » Establish four funding round selection committees to assess validity of applications – committees to include trustees, young people and stakehold
    » Notification of decisions and report schedules and negotiation with opportunity/equipment suppliers
    » Periodic review of progress and updates to investors and the wider network of contacts

    Agree baseline figures of income prior to December 2011 and record in year increased income as a result of participation in The Big Give

    Aim 2

    To increase the number of young people accessing development opportunities


    » Promote grant opportunities through existing and new networks and the creation of a promotional campaign with advice from local marketing partners
    » Provide guidance and support for prospective applicants and their referees to increase chances of a successful application

    Agree baseline figures of numbers accessing opportunities for year ending 2011 and compare at December 2012

    To increase the number of young people developing skill and talents


    » To agree success measures with young people and opportunities providers
    » Establish reporting schedule with young people and opportunity providers to demonstrate what they have achieved

    Young people will agree realistic performance measurement to be assessed periodically and opportunity providers will provide third party progress reports

  • Impact


    Create a cycle of increased investment in the programme – with an increase of 20% private sector partners during 2012 and the following two years
    Establish individual giving as a source of new income in 2012 with a subsequent 10% increase per year for the next two years
    The key success measure will be to meet the increasing demand for support from applicants and consolidate the Trust as a focal point for investors and a central point of development funding for young people


    Risks could include failure to secure investment; the Trust has a number of existing private sector partners and an increasing network of business contacts – the potential to draw down additional funding against the investment is likely to secure funding from current and new partners
    failure to engage young people; a network of referral partners exists to promote the funding, promotional literature located in relevant settings and an increasing demand for support at each funding round


    Donors have their investment linked to a young person(s) and will receive progress reports from applicants and or opportunity providers via the Administrator – the Trust has been successful in retaining the support of investors through the use of specific reporting and general updates on progress

  • Background


    Salford’s population is 216,103 of which 55,763 are children aged 0 to 19. It is ranked as the 15th most deprived local authority (LA) area (IMD (2007). Family poverty is a real challenge with 29.4% of children living in poverty (HMRC 2008); ranking Salford within the worst 20% LA’s for child poverty. Rates of child poverty are between 50% -74.4% in 9 of its 20 wards. Since the 2008 data child poverty levels have increased with higher unemployment, more lone parents and the current recession.


    The prime beneficiaries will be young people 5-25 years old (and their families). As recipients the funding will be available for young people across the whole of Salford with special consideration given to areas of high deprivation.   • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    The Trust was launched in 2004 and has developed extensive young people networks and has a growing number of private sector partners/investors. Organisations with similar aspirations have now begun to allocate funding through the Trust rather than create something additional and this has created a more strategic approach to grant funding. Over 200 young people have already benefited and the Trust is the only provider of grant funding opportunities of this type in the City
