  • Need

There is a problem in the village with young people hanging around with little to do to occupy themselves, which can lead to damage, litter and vandalism.

The aim is to provide an area where the young people can spend time, with recreation facilities in good order, such as the BMX track and the skateboard park. The project would also include the provision of picnic tables and sitting areas to increase the age range that use the area. There will also be landscaping to provide an atmosphere of care for the area to reduce littering and vandalism.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide recreation and sports facilities for a wide range of of age groups.

» Repair and upgrade the BMX track and the skateboard park.
» Provide picnic and sitting area for people of all age groups.
» Landscape the area to provide a pleasant environment.

    What success will look like

Success will be demonstrated by completion of the three elements of the project - repair / upgrade of existing facilities; provision of picnic / sitting area and the landscaping

    Aim 2

    Reduce litter and vandalism

» Get young people engaged with the project - design teams for the skateboard park, litter picking and landscaping
» Provide a pleasant environment which is hoped to reduce the tendency to damage or litter
» Increase use by other age groups to provide a community feel to the area

    What success will look like

Success will be demonstrated by a reduction in litter and damage reported in the routine inspections by the Trust and SSDC. ...

  • Impact

An engagement with the young people in the village rather than their feeling of being outsiders. This should be seen in a long term reduction in damage, litter and vandalism.

The main risk to the project is a failure to engage with the target young people and their continued path of damage and vandalism. This could lead to the sitting area being damaged and any landscaping being spoiled - thereby defeating the aims of the project.

Quarterly reports on progress based initially on the project progress and them a quarterly summary of the monthly reports on the state of the Recreation Ground, which is provided by the Trust to the Parish Council, Police and District Council

  • Background

The southern part of the existing Recreation Ground on West Street Stoke sub Hamdon is allocated for this project. It consists of two football grounds, a pavilion and dilapidated BMX track and skateboard park and a youth shelter. There is a long term plan being developed to increase the use of this area by providing extensive facilities over time and this project is the first step.

There is a recent track record of vandalism, damage, intimidation and excessive littering by young people hanging around various places in the village. The young people need somewhere to go, but it needs to be a part of the village - not just hidden away in the corner. This project will benefit all age groups in the local area by providing an area that meets the need of young people for 'their space', but does it by integrating it into an area usable by all age groups. Beneficiaries - everyone
