  • Need

Deaf people are often forced to rely on friends or relatives to interpret a doctor's diagnosis. Being unable to communicate with their GP is a situation that hundreds of people face daily in the UK, simply because they are deaf.

Our award-winning, web-based system, SignTranslate, has been developed to allow doctors and their Deaf patients to effectively communicate with each other when an interpreter is unable to travel to the surgery, or in an emergency. SignTranslate enables GPs and their Deaf patients to connect to an online interpreter via webcam and phone. Consequently patients can be treated without delay, thus avoiding the ongoing confusion, misdiagnosis and inappropriate use of family members.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Improve Deaf awareness in healthcare settings

» Deaf ambassadors will provide comprehensive deaf awareness training to healthcare professionals to improve Deaf people's experiences.

    What success will look like

    Aim 2

    Continue to develop SignTranslate

» By using an interpreter online, via a webcam, medical staff can communicate directly to their Deaf patients.

    What success will look like

    Aim 3

    Raise awareness in Deaf communities

» We are working to recruit regional Deaf ambassadors to promote SignTranslate at Deaf events and local/regional Deaf clubs/organisations.

    What success will look like
