The eet! Community Food Project will provide young people with work-based training and business qualifications through the sale of sustainable ethical food at a new community cafe. The project will also provide volunteer opportunities that equate to credits donated to local community groups.

The Crew Club
Based in 20% most deprived area of England. Large number of yp locally have low educational achievement levels, low self-esteem, low aspiration, high state dependency. Education system doesn't fully recognise non-academic achievement or focus on work ready skills i.e. sales, customer service, business skills. Massive youth unemployment
yp with no/low skills squeezed out of job market through employers high demand for graduates. Yp feel marginalised and not part of community (2011 London riots).
The eet! project will tackle the problem by taking on local young people and providing them with a real working environment and equip them with enterprise skills. This will be linked to a 30-week foundation learning programme focussing on enterprise & employability skills in partnership with a local college. The Crew Club is based in the heart of the community and has a track record of working successfully with young people to achieve, confidence, skills, volunteering, qualifications and jobs.
To reduce the number of 16-30 year-olds in Whitehawk who are unemployed
Activities» Provide work-based placements in the day-to-day running of the cafe
» Provide volunteering opportunities in the day-to-day running of the cafe
Success will be 50% of young people in project will be actively engaged in job seeking and 10% will go on to direct employment.
To increase the number of 16-30 year-olds in Whitehawk achieving a business qualification.
Activities» Provide accredited food and business training in conjunction with a Foundation Learning programme.
» Provide accredited food and business training in conjunction with a volunteering programme.
Success will be 70% of young people in project will achieve a level 1 business-related qualification.
To provide the Whitehawk community with an ethical and sustainable food cafe.
Activities» Source, make and sell locally produced and ethical food to the community and workforce of Whitehawk in a community cafe.
Success will be 100 customers every month accessing the community cafe and 60% of our food sold is ethical.

The community cafe to be open beyond one year
There is a risk the cafe is unsustainable because of lower than expected sales occur. We have dealt with this risk by consulting local people and workforce on what food products they would like to see sold in the cafe. There is also of lower than expected volunteer recruitment. We have dealt with this risk by ensuring widespread effective advertising of roles.
We will report to donors by providing a 6-monthly written report which would include case studies. Donors can keep up-to-date with the progress of the project via a blog and Twitter. Donors would also be welcome to visit the project.

The Whitehawk estate faces multiple deprivation. The 'Income Deprivation Affecting Children' (2007) indices of deprivation show that Whitehawk contains one Super Output Area (SOA) with around 1,500 population that is in the 1% most deprived areas in England. And two further SOA's in the 3% most deprived areas in England. One SOA in Whitehawk is in the 0.5% most deprived areas in England for Underlying Indicators (2007) - Education ,Skills and Training. The local secondary school closed in 2006.
Children and young people this project will be working with live largely on/around the Whitehawk Estate (population 1400, 13 to 19 yr olds) and most are from families living in poverty or situations where there is evidenced levels of multiple deprivation. Brighton and Hove Youth Service evidenced 80% of young people in the Whitehawk Neighbourhood being deprived (2010). Domestic violence levels in the neighbourhood are high as are numbers of children on the child protection register and at risk.
The Crew Club has been working at grass-root level in the community for 12 years. Majority of the staff team live or have lived in the community and understand the issues of the young people. The founders of the organisation who live in the community were awarded MBE’s in 2008 for excellent services to young people. Education, employment & training are at the heart of the organisations work. It works in partnership with a major college, has a very good track record working with NEET young people
