This is ongoing

  • Need

SignHealth helps Deaf people within the mental health system make their choice known in case reviews, planning meetings and Mental Health Tribunals. We also support those who have contact with social services and housing departments so that they can live more independently.

We provide one-to-one BSL support for Deaf people. Our advocates help to explain what is going on and support the person to assert their rights.
For example, our advocacy services have supported some Deaf people when Social Services have wanted to take their children away. This can obviously be very upsetting and confusing as the child protection system can be very complicated.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

» Equality of access for Deaf people in their encounters with the criminal justice system and other official proceedings

    What success will look like

    Aim 2

» Improved social justice for Deaf people. We empower the people we work with to understand difficult situations and the choices they may have.

    What success will look like

    Aim 3

» Increased awareness of the rights and needs of Deaf people in relation to the Disabaility and Discrimination Act

    What success will look like

    Aim 4

    Deaf IMHAs

» The provision of Deaf IMHAs (Independent Mental Health Advocate) to support a Deaf person sectioned under the Mental Health Act

    What success will look like

  • Impact

It is no longer acceptable to simply provide an interpreter with a non-signing advocate. Direct communication is vital to ensure the Deaf person fully understands the proceedings and the facts arising.

We are always happy to report back to donor organisations on the progress of our projects.
